ವೀರಲವ Veeralava

ರಘುವಂಶದ ರಾಮನ ಯಜ್ಞದ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಕುದುರೆಯು, ರಾಜರೆಲ್ಲ ಹೆದರಿ ತಡೆಯದೆ, ತಲೆಬಾಗಿ ನಮಸ್ಕರಿಸಿ ಕಳುಹಿಸುತ್ತಿರಲು, ಭೂಮಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಸಂಚರಿಸುತ್ತ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿ ಮುನಿಯ ಆಶ್ರಮದ ತೋಟಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿತು. ಹುಲ್ಲು ಹಸಿರನ್ನು ತಿನ್ನಲು ಬಯಸಿ ತೋಟ ಹೊಕ್ಕಿತು. ಆಗ ತನ್ನ ಗೆಳೆಯರೊಡನೆ ಆಟವಾಡುತ್ತ ಬಿಲ್ಲು ಹಿಡಿದು ಬಂದ ವೀರಲವನು ಆ ಅಲಂಕೃತ ಕುದುರೆಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡನು.

All the kings, afraid, let the fine sacrificial horse of Rama of the Raghu line pass without hindrance, hailing and bowing to it. Wandering the earth, the horse came into the garden of Valmiki's own hermitage and entered it, eager to eat the green grass. Just then Veeralava, who had come playing with his companions, bow in hand, saw that adorned horse.

ಎಲ್ಲಿಂದ ಬಂದ ಕುದುರೆ ಇದು? ಹೂದೋಟವನ್ನು ಹೊಕ್ಕು ತುಳಿದು ಹಾಳುಮಾಡಿತಲ್ಲ; ಆಶ್ರಮ ಕಾಯುವ ಕೆಲಸ ನನಗೆ ವಾಲ್ಮೀಕಿ ಮುನಿನಾಥ ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಿ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದಾರೆ; ವರುಣ ತನ್ನ ಲೋಕದಿಂದ ಬಂದು ಕೋಪಗೊಳ್ಳುವನೇ? ಎಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸುತ್ತ ಲವನು ಕುದುರೆಯ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ನೋಡಲು, ಅದರ ನೆತ್ತಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಶೋಭಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಪಟ್ಟದ ಬರಹವನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಓದಿಕೊಂಡನು.

'Where has this horse come from? It entered the flower garden and trampled it. Sage Valmiki entrusted me to guard this place always before he left; will Varuna come from his world and grow angry?' Thus thinking, Lava walked up to the horse, and seeing the proud inscription shining on its forehead, he read it.

'ಭೂಮಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೌಸಲ್ಯೆ ಪಡೆದ ಮಗ ರಾಮನೊಬ್ಬನೇ ವೀರ; ಇದು ಅವನ ಯಜ್ಞದ ಕುದುರೆ; ಯಾರಾದರೂ ಸಮರ್ಥರಿದ್ದರೆ ತಡೆಯಲಿ' ಎಂಬ ಬರಹವನ್ನು ಲವ ಓದಿದನು. ಈ ಗರ್ವವನ್ನು ನಾನು ಮುರಿಯದಿದ್ದರೆ ಜನರೆಲ್ಲ ನನ್ನ ತಾಯಿಯನ್ನು ಬಂಜೆ ಎನ್ನುವುದಿಲ್ಲವೇ? ಹಾಗಾದರೆ ನನ್ನ ಈ ದೊಡ್ಡ ತೋಳುಗಳು ಏತಕ್ಕೆ? ಎಂದು ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞೆ ತೊಟ್ಟು ಲವನು ಸಿಟ್ಟಿನಿಂದ ಎದ್ದು ನಿಂತನು.

Lava read the writing: 'On earth, Rama the son borne by Kausalya is the one and only hero; this is his sacrificial horse; let anyone capable stop it if he can.' He thought, 'If I do not break this pride, will not everyone call my mother barren? Then what use are these strong arms of mine?' Taking a vow, Lava rose up blazing with anger.

ಲವನು ತನ್ನ ಮೇಲುವಸ್ತ್ರವನ್ನು (ಉತ್ತರೀಯ) ತೆಗೆದು ಹುರಿಗೊಳಿಸಿ ಕುದುರೆಯ ಕೊರಳಿಗೆ ಬಿಗಿದು ಬಾಳೆ ಮರಕ್ಕೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿದನು. ಆಗ ಮುನಿಗಳ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ನಡುಗಿ 'ಬೇಡ ಬೇಡ, ಅರಸುಗಳ ಕುದುರೆ ಇದು, ಬಿಡು, ಅವರು ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಹೊಡೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ' ಎಂದರು. ಆಗ ಲವನು ನಗುತ್ತ 'ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣರ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಹೆದರಿದರೆ ಜಾನಕಿಯ ಮಗ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಬೆದರುವನೆ? ನೀವು ಹೋಗಿ' ಎಂದು, ಸಾಹಸದಿಂದ ಬಿಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೆದೆಯೇರಿಸಿ, ಠೇಂಕಾರ ಮಾಡಿ ನಿಂತುಕೊಂಡನು.

Lava took off his upper cloth, twisted it into a cord, bound it round the horse's neck and tied it to a banana tree. At this the sages' children trembled greatly and cried, 'No, no, leave the kings' horse, they will beat us.' Laughing, Lava said, 'If the brahmins' children are afraid, will the son of Janaki be frightened by this? You go away,' and boldly he strung his bow, stroked it and twanged the string, and stood ready.
