ವಸಂತ ಮುಖ ತೋರಲಿಲ್ಲ Vasanta Mukha Toralilla

ಒಡೆಯನ ಮನೆಯ ಅಂಗಳದಲ್ಲಿ ವಸಂತ ತುಂಬಿ ತುಳುಕುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಮಾವಿನ ಮರಗಳು ಮೈ ತುಂಬಿ ನಿಂತಿವೆ, ಹಕ್ಕಿಗಳು ರೆಕ್ಕೆ ಬಿಚ್ಚಿ ಹಾರುತ್ತಿವೆ, ಕೋಗಿಲೆಗಳು ಮನ ತುಂಬಿ ಹಾಡುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಭೂಮಿಗೆ ಸಮುದ್ರದಂತೆ ಸಂಭ್ರಮ ಉಕ್ಕಿ ಹರಿಯುತ್ತಿದೆ.

The poem opens with the splendour of the rich man's courtyard: mango trees in full bloom, birds spreading their wings to fly, cuckoos singing with full hearts, and a joy that surges over the earth like a sea.

ಆ ಸಂಭ್ರಮದ ನಡುವೆ ಒಂದು ಪುಟ್ಟ ಹುಡುಗಿ ಇದ್ದಾಳೆ. ಒಳಗೂ ಹೊರಗೂ ತುಂಬಿರುವ ಸಡಗರವನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಅವಳಿಗೆ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯ. 'ಈ ಪುಟ್ಟ ಪೋರಿಗೆ ಇದೇನಾಗಿದೆ' ಎಂದು ಕವಿ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.

In the midst of this abundance there is a little girl. She is amazed at the festivity all around, inside and out, and the poet asks what has come over this little child.

ಒಡೆಯನ ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಸುಂದರ. ನವಿಲು ಚಿತ್ತಾರ ಬಿಡಿಸಿದೆ, ಬಾಗಿಲಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾವಿನೆಲೆಯ ತೋರಣ ಬಳುಕುತ್ತಿದೆ, ಮಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೂವು ಮುಗುಳುನಗೆ ಬೀರುತ್ತಿದೆ, ಹೊಳೆಯುವ ರಂಗೋಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಎಳೆಯ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಥಳಥಳಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಹಾಲುಗಲ್ಲದ ಎಳೆಯ ಮಗು ಅದನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಮೂಕವಿಸ್ಮಿತಳಾಗಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ನೋಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಳೆ.

The rich household is in festive splendour: a peacock drawn in decoration, a swaying mango-leaf garland at the doorway, the smile of jasmine flowers, and the young sun glittering in the bright rangoli. A tiny milk-cheeked child gazes at it all, struck speechless, again and again.

ಈಗ ಕವಿ ಗುಡಿಸಲಿನ ಚಿತ್ರ ಕೊಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಲ್ಲಿ ಅಮ್ಮ ಕೆಮ್ಮುತ್ತ (ಗೂರುತ್ತ) ಮಲಗಿದ್ದಾಳೆ. ತೂತು ಬಿದ್ದ ಸೀರೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಎಳೆಯ ಸೂರ್ಯ ಸೊರಗಿ ಬೀಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಸುಣ್ಣ ಕಾಣದ ಗೋಡೆಗಳು ಮುಖ ಮುಚ್ಚಿಕೊಂಡಿವೆ. ಕತ್ತಲೆ ತುಂಬಿದ ಗುಡಿಸಲಿಗೆ ಬರಲು ವಸಂತನಿಗೂ ಹೆದರಿಕೆ.

After the rich splendour comes the pitiful picture of the poor hut. The mother lies coughing; the young sun sags through a torn saree; the unwhitewashed walls hide their faces; the hut is filled with thick darkness. Even spring is afraid to enter such a hut.

ಶ್ರಮಿಕರ ಕೆಲಸವೆಲ್ಲ ನಿಂತುಹೋಗಿದೆ. ಕಮ್ಮಾರನ ಕುಲುಮೆ ಉರಿಯಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಕುಂಬಾರನ ತಿಗುರಿ ತಿರುಗಲಿಲ್ಲ, ನೇಕಾರನ ಮಗ್ಗ ಉಸಿರಾಡಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಕೇರಿಯ ಮಾರನ ಒಲೆ ಹೊತ್ತಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಇವರಾರಿಗೂ ವಸಂತ ಮುಖ ತೋರಲಿಲ್ಲ.

The lives of the labourers have come to a halt: the blacksmith's forge did not burn, the potter's wheel did not turn, the weaver's loom did not breathe, the cobbler's oven was not lit. To none of them did spring show its face.

ಗುಡಿಸಲೊಳಗೆ ಬರಲು ವಸಂತ ಹೆದರಿದನೆ? ಹರಿದ ಚಿಂದಿ ಬಟ್ಟೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಂಡು ಅವನು ಮರುಗಿದನೆ? ಎಂದು ಕವಿ ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಪುಟ್ಟ ಹುಡುಗಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಬಡತನದ ಅರ್ಥ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗದೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ನೆಲವನ್ನು ತಟ್ಟುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಳೆ.

The poem ends with questions: did spring fear to enter the hut, did it grieve at the sight of the torn rags? The innocent little girl, unaware of poverty's meaning, keeps tapping the floor again and again.
