ವಚನಗಳು Vachanagalu

ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಯ ಪ್ರಾಣಿ, ಪಕ್ಷಿ, ಗಿಡ, ಮರ, ವಸ್ತುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಗುಣಗಳು ಭೇದವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ. ಜ್ಞಾನಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳ ಸಂಗದ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೂ ಈ ವಚನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಚಿತ್ರಣವಿದೆ.

The opening note explains that good qualities live naturally in the creatures, plants and things of nature without distinction, and that these vachanas also picture the company of the wise and the ignorant.

ಚಂದನವನ್ನು ಕಡಿದು, ಕೊರೆದು, ತೇದರೂ ನೊಂದೆನೆಂದು ಅದು ತನ್ನ ಪರಿಮಳವನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಗುಣ ಕಷ್ಟದಲ್ಲೂ ಕೆಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ಇದು ಮೊದಲ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ.

Sandalwood, though cut, carved and ground, never gives up its fragrance saying it is hurt. This is the first image for goodness that does not fail even under pain.

ಚಿನ್ನವನ್ನು ಕಡಿದು ಬೆಂಕಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಯಿಸಿದರೂ ಅದು ಕಳಂಕ ಹಿಡಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಬ್ಬನ್ನು ಗಾಣದಲ್ಲಿ ಅರೆದು ಬೇಯಿಸಿ ಸಕ್ಕರೆ ಮಾಡಿದರೂ ಅದು ತನ್ನ ಸಿಹಿಯನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

Gold heated and beaten takes on no blemish; sugarcane crushed in the press and boiled into sugar never loses its sweetness. The true quality of a thing only shines purer under testing.

ನಾನು ಹಿಂದೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಹೀನ ಕೆಲಸಗಳನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ತಂದು ನನ್ನ ಮುಂದಿಟ್ಟರೂ, ತಂದೆ ಚೆನ್ನಮಲ್ಲಿಕಾರ್ಜುನ ನೀನು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಕೊಂದರೂ ಸಹ ನಿನಗೆ ಶರಣು ಎನ್ನುವುದನ್ನು ನಾನು ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

Even if all her past wrongs are laid before her, she tells her father-god Chennamallikarjuna that even if he kills her, she will not stop saying 'I surrender.' Her devotion is unshakeable.

ಅರಿಯದವರ (ಅಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳ) ಜೊತೆ ಸ್ನೇಹ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ, ಕಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಕಲ್ಲು ಹೊಡೆದು ಕಿಡಿಯನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಂತೆ ನೋವು ಮತ್ತು ಹಾನಿಯಷ್ಟೇ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ.

Keeping company with the ignorant is like striking stone against stone and getting only sparks: harshness and little of worth.

ಬಲ್ಲವರ (ಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳ) ಜೊತೆ ಸಂಗ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಮೊಸರನ್ನು ಕಡೆದು ಬೆಣ್ಣೆ ತೆಗೆದಂತೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಫಲ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಶರಣರ ಸಂಗ ಮಾಡಿದರೆ ಕರ್ಪೂರದ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ಬೆಂಕಿಯನ್ನು ಸೇರಿ ಬೆಳಗಿದಂತೆ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಶುದ್ಧಿಯಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.

The company of the wise is like churning curds to draw out butter, full of nourishing gain; and the company of the Sharanas is like fire taking a mountain of camphor, a complete purifying flame.
