ಶುಕನಾಸನ ಉಪದೇಶ Shukanaasana Upadesha

ಹಣ ತಾನಾಗಿಯೇ ಕೆಡುಕು ಮಾಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಯಾರ ಬಳಿ ಹಣ ಗುಡ್ಡೆಯಾಗುತ್ತದೋ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಸುಳ್ಳು ಹೆಮ್ಮೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ. 'ದುಡ್ಡಿನಿಂದ ಏನು ಬೇಕಾದರೂ ಕೊಳ್ಳಬಲ್ಲೆ, ಯಾರನ್ನಾದರೂ ನನ್ನ ಆಳಾಗಿಸಬಲ್ಲೆ' ಎಂಬ ಅಹಂಕಾರ ಹುಟ್ಟುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಅಹಂಕಾರವೇ ಅನರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Money by itself does no harm. But the one in whom it piles up is seized by a false pride: 'with money I can buy anything, make anyone my servant.' That arrogance is what creates ruin.

ಸಂಪತ್ತು, ಅಧಿಕಾರ, ಭೂಮಿ, ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ತನ್ನದಲ್ಲ; ತಾನು ಬರೀ ಅವುಗಳ ಮೇಲ್ವಿಚಾರಕನಾಗಿ ಕೂತಿದ್ದೇನೆ ಅಷ್ಟೆ ಎಂಬ ತಿಳಿವಳಿಕೆ ಅರಸನಿಗೆ ಇರಬೇಕು. ಹೀಗೆ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ಹೇಳುವ ಹಿರಿಯ ಮಂತ್ರಿಗಳು ಅರಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇರಬೇಕು. ಈ ಪಾಠದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಟ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ಏರುತ್ತಿರುವ ರಾಜಕುಮಾರನಿಗೆ ಹಿರಿಯ ಮಂತ್ರಿ ಉಪದೇಶ ನೀಡುತ್ತಾನೆ.

A king must hold the wisdom that wealth, power, and land are not his own; he merely sits as their caretaker. Elder ministers who give such counsel must be in the palace. This chapter pictures an elder minister advising a prince who is ascending the throne.

ಉಪದೇಶ ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾದರೂ ನಿನ್ನಂಥ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯವರನ್ನೇ ಆರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಶುದ್ಧವಾದ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ಉಪದೇಶದ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಗುಣ ಅರ್ಥವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಸ್ಫಟಿಕ ಮಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಚಂದ್ರನ ಬೆಳಕು ಪ್ರತಿಬಿಂಬವಾಗುವಂತೆ, ಶುದ್ಧ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತ್ರ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮಾತು ನೆಲೆಗೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.

Even to speak counsel one must choose only good people like you, for only an untainted mind can grasp the virtue of advice, just as the moon's light can be reflected only in a crystal gem.

ಗುರುವಿನ ಮಾತು ಎಷ್ಟೇ ಶುದ್ಧವಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಮೂರ್ಖನ ಕಿವಿಗೆ ಅದು ಹೊರೆ. ಕಿವಿಯೊಳಗೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮಾತು ಹೊಕ್ಕರೆ, ತಿಳಿನೀರು ಹೊಕ್ಕಂತೆ ಸಂಕಟಪಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ಸಜ್ಜನರಿಗೆ ಗುರುವಿನ ಮಾತು ಕಿವಿಗೆ ಆಭರಣ; ಅದರಿಂದ ಅವರ ಮುಖ ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ಶ್ರೀಮಂತವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮುಂಜಾವಿನ ಚಂದ್ರ ಕತ್ತಲನ್ನು ಕಳೆಯುವಂತೆ, ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಮಾತು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನ ಕೊಳೆಯನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ತೊಳೆಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಆಗ ಬಾಳಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಯಮ, ನಿಷ್ಪಕ್ಷಪಾತ, ಶಾಂತಿ ಕಾಣಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ.

However pure the teacher's word, to a fool's ear it is a burden; when a kind word enters his ear he suffers as if clear water had got in. But to the good a teacher's word is an ornament for the ear that makes their face richer still. As the dawn moon dispels darkness, a kind word washes away all the grime of the mind, and then restraint, fairness, and peace appear in life.

ಕುಲ ಎಷ್ಟು ಎತ್ತರವಿದ್ದರೆ ಏನು, ಎಷ್ಟು ಓದಿದರೆ ಏನು? ಮೂರ್ಖನ ದೌರ್ಜನ್ಯಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾವ ಮದ್ದೂ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಚಂದನದ ಕೊರಡಿಗೆ ಬೆಂಕಿ ಬಿದ್ದರೂ ಅದು ಸುಡುತ್ತದೆ. ನೀರು ಬಿದ್ದಾಗ ಬೆಂಕಿ ಆರುವುದು ಸಹಜ; ಆದರೆ ವಡಬಾಗ್ನಿ ಕಡಲಿನ ನೀರಿನೊಳಗೇ ಉರಿಯುತ್ತದೆ. ಮೂರ್ಖನ ಸ್ವಭಾವಕ್ಕೆ ಇದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಉದಾಹರಣೆ.

What use is a high birth, what use is much learning? There is no medicine for a fool's cruelty. Even fire fallen on sandalwood still burns it. Water normally quenches fire, yet the undersea fire (vadabaagni) blazes within the ocean itself. This is a fitting example of a fool's nature.

ಗುರುವಿನ ಉಪದೇಶ ಎಂದರೆ ಜನರ ಒಳ-ಹೊರಗಿನ ಕೊಳೆಯನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ತೊಳೆಯುವ ನೀರಿಲ್ಲದ ಸ್ನಾನ; ಕೂದಲು ನೆರೆಯದೆ, ಮೈ ಸುಕ್ಕುಗಟ್ಟದೆ ಬರುವ ಮುಪ್ಪು; ಬೊಜ್ಜು ಬೆಳೆಯದೆ ಬರುವ ಗೌರವ; ಬಂಗಾರವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಮಾಡಿದ ಬೆಲೆಬಾಳುವ ಕಿವಿಯೋಲೆ; ಪಂಜಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಬೆಳಗುವ ಬೆಳಕು; ಆಯಾಸ ತರದ ಜಾಗರಣೆ. ಇದು ರಾಜರಿಗೆ ಬಹಳ ಮುಖ್ಯ; ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಉಪದೇಶ ಮಾಡುವವರೇ ಕಡಿಮೆ.

A teacher's counsel is a waterless bath that cleans people's grime within and without; an old age that comes without greying hair or wrinkled skin; a dignity that comes without growing fat; a precious ear-ring made without gold; a light that shines without a torch; a wakefulness that brings no agitation. This matters most of all to kings, for there are few who counsel them.

ರಾಜರ ಮನೆತನದಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದರೆ ಸಾಕು, ಅಹಂಕಾರದಿಂದ ಅವರ ಕಿವಿ ಕಿವುಡಾಗುತ್ತದೆ; ಎಂಥ ಉಪದೇಶವೂ ಅವರ ಕಿವಿಗೆ ನಾಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಯಾರದೋ ಒತ್ತಾಯಕ್ಕೆ ಕೇಳಿದರೂ, ಆನೆಯಂತೆ ಅರೆಮುಚ್ಚಿದ ಕಣ್ಣಿನಲ್ಲಿ 'ತನಗೆ ಹೇಳಬೇಕಾದ್ದು ಏನೂ ಉಳಿದಿಲ್ಲ' ಎಂಬ ಭಾವ. ರಾಜ್ಯ ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಒಂದು ವಿಷ; ಅಧಿಕಾರದ ಸೋಂಕು ತಾಗಿದವರಿಗೆ ಬುದ್ಧಿ ಮಂಕಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಇದೆಲ್ಲ ದುಡ್ಡಿನ ಮಹಿಮೆ.

Merely being born in a royal family is enough to make the ears go deaf with arrogance; no counsel pierces them. Even if they listen out of someone's pressure, their half-shut eyes, like an elephant's, say 'there is nothing left to teach me.' Sovereignty is a poison; whoever is touched by the infection of its power has the intellect dulled. All this is the power of money.
