ಶಬರಿ Shabari

ಶಬರಿ ಮತಂಗ ಋಷಿಯ ಆಶ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ಇರುವ ಮುದುಕಿ. ಅವಳು ಬಹಳ ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಶ್ರೀರಾಮ ಬರುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂದು ನಂಬಿ ಕಾಯುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಳೆ. 'ನಾನು ನಿಂತಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ನಿಂತಿದ್ದೇನೆ, ರಾಮಾ ನೀನು ಯಾವಾಗ ಬರುತ್ತೀಯೆ' ಎಂದು ಹಾಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

An aged Shabari, living in sage Matanga's hermitage, has long waited in faith for Rama. She sings that she stands rooted where she is, asking when her lord Rama will come.

ಸೀತೆಯನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತ ಶೋಕದಿಂದ ಬಂದ ರಾಮ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣರು ಮತಂಗಾಶ್ರಮವನ್ನು ಪ್ರವೇಶಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ರಾಮ ಗಿರಿವನವನ್ನು 'ನನ್ನ ಸೀತೆ ಎಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾಳೆ ಹೇಳಿ' ಎಂದು ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣ ಅಣ್ಣನನ್ನು ಸಮಾಧಾನ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Grief-stricken after Sita's abduction, Rama and Lakshmana enter Matanga's hermitage while searching for her, guided by the advice of Danu. Rama beseeches the very hills and forest to tell him where Sita is, and Lakshmana consoles his brother, saying that if the sun loses its lustre, who else can give light.

ಶಬರಿ ತಲೆ, ಕಂಕುಳು, ಕೈಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಹೂ ಹಣ್ಣು ಎಲೆಗಳನ್ನು ತಂದು ರಾಮನಿಗೆ ಅರ್ಪಿಸಲು ಸಿದ್ಧತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ನಿನ್ನೆ ತಂದ ಬಾಡಿದ ಹೂಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದು ಹೊಸ ಹೂ ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳನ್ನು ಜೋಡಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. 'ಎಂದು ಕಾಂಬೆ ನಾ ರಾಮನ' ಎಂದು ಹಾಡುತ್ತ ಮಾಲೆ ಕಟ್ಟುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

Shabari gathers tender shoots, flowers and fruit, replaces yesterday's withered offerings with fresh ones and adorns the altar. As she weaves a garland she sings of when she will at last behold Rama, recalling his virtues as the son of Dasharatha and friend of good people.

ರಾಮ 'ತಾಯಿ, ದಾರಿಗರಿಗೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಆಶ್ರಯ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆಯೇ' ಎಂದು ಕೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಶಬರಿ ತಿರುಗಿ ನೋಡಿ, ಇದು ರಾಮನೇ ಎಂದು ತಿಳಿದು ಬಹಳ ಸಂತೋಷಪಡುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ಅವಳು ರಾಮ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಣರಿಗೆ ಹೂ ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಉಪಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ.

When Rama asks whether wayfarers can find shelter here, Shabari turns with a trembling heart, and once her wonder settles she recognises him as Rama, the great one. The chorus describes her overjoyed welcome, her tears, her placing of a forest garland on him and offering of the sweetest fruit.

ರಾಮನ ದರ್ಶನದಿಂದ ಶಬರಿ 'ಸುಖಿ ನಾ, ಸುಖಿ ನಾ' ಎಂದು ಹಾಡಿ ಕುಣಿಯುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ತನ್ನ ಆಸೆ ತೀರಿತು, ಹಂಬಲ ಕಳೆಯಿತು, ತಾನು ಪೂರ್ಣ ಸುಖಿ ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ರಾಮ ಅವಳ ಭಕ್ತಿ ಆತಿಥ್ಯಗಳಿಗೆ ಮೆಚ್ಚಿ 'ನಿನ್ನ ಆದರದಿಂದ ನಾವೂ ಸುಖಿ' ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Beholding Rama, Shabari dances singing that she is happy, simply happy, her desire fulfilled and her longing dissolved. Rama honours her innocent devotion and hospitality, saying that in her loving care they too are content. She feels her gurus' blessings have borne fruit.

ಶಬರಿ ತನ್ನ ಬಾಳಿನ ಹಂಬಲ ತೀರಿತು, ಇನ್ನು ಬಾಳಿ ಏನು ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸಿ, ರಾಮನ ಮುಂದೆ ಮುಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಬಯಸುತ್ತಾಳೆ. 'ಇದು ಮರಣವಲ್ಲ, ಮುಕ್ತಿ, ಇದೇ ನನ್ನ ಆಸೆ' ಎನ್ನುತ್ತಾಳೆ. ರಾಮ ಮನಸ್ಸಿಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೂ 'ಅಸ್ತು' ಎಂದು ಒಪ್ಪಿ, ಅವಳ ಬಯಕೆ ಸಿದ್ಧಿಸಲಿ ಎಂದು ಹರಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Feeling that with her longing fulfilled life now has no purpose, Shabari asks Rama for liberation, saying this is not death but mukti, her one wish. Though his heart hesitates, Rama finally blesses her with 'so be it, go to the fulfilment of your desire.' Bowing to all, she circumambulates the sacred fire on the altar and enters it.

ಶಬರಿ ಮುಕ್ತಿ ಹೊಂದಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ರಾಮ 'ಹೆಣ್ಣಿನ ರೀತಿ ಅರಿಯಲಾಗದು, ಎಂಥ ನಿಷ್ಠೆ, ಎಂಥ ಪ್ರೀತಿ' ಎಂದು ಅಚ್ಚರಿಪಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಮತ್ತೆ ಸೀತೆಯ ನೆನಪು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು, ಶಬರಿ ಸೀತೆಯನ್ನು ಕಾಪಾಡಲಿ ಎಂದು ಹಾರೈಸಿ, ಸೀತೆಯನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕಲು ಮುಂದೆ ಹೊರಡುತ್ತಾರೆ.

After Shabari attains liberation, Rama marvels at a woman's incomprehensible loyalty and love. He observes that those drawn to light do not see the wick's soot, praising her devotion, and prays that Shabari, now merged in the elements, may protect Sita, before resuming the search for her.
