ಕೆಮ್ಮನೆ ಮೀಸೆವೊತ್ತೆನೇ Kemmane Meesevottene

ದ್ರೋಣನಿಗೆ ಬಡತನ ಬಂದೊದಗಿತು. ಅವನು ತನ್ನ ಮಗ ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥಾಮನನ್ನು ಜೊತೆಗೂಡಿಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಊರೂರು ಅಲೆದು ಪರಶುರಾಮ (ಭಾರ್ಗವ)ನ ಬಳಿಗೆ ಬಂದನು. ನಾರುಮಡಿಯನ್ನು ಸೊಂಟಕ್ಕೆ ಸುತ್ತಿ, ಜಟೆ ಬೆಳೆಸಿ ತಪೋವನಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದ ಪರಶುರಾಮನು, ಧನವನ್ನು ಬೇಡಿ ಬಂದ ದ್ರೋಣನನ್ನು ಕಂಡನು. ಚಿನ್ನದ ಪಾತ್ರೆ ಇಲ್ಲದ ಕಾರಣ ಮಣ್ಣಿನ ಪಾತ್ರೆಯಲ್ಲೇ ಅರ್ಫ್ಯವನ್ನು ಎತ್ತಿ ಪೂಜಿಸಿದನು.

Poverty struck Drona. Taking his son Ashwatthama with him, he wandered from land to land and came to Parashurama (Bhargava). Parashurama, who had a bark-cloth wrapped round his waist and wore matted locks as he set out for the penance-grove, saw Drona who had come seeking wealth, and since he had no golden vessel, he raised the sacred water (arghya) in a mud pot and honoured him.

ಪರಶುರಾಮನು ಹೇಳಿದನು: ನನ್ನ ಒಡವೆಯನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಬೇಡುವವರಿಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟುಬಿಟ್ಟೆ, ಭೂಮಿಯನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಗುರುಗಳಿಗೆ ದಾನ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಈಗ ನನ್ನ ಕೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಅಡಿಕೆಯೂ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಪಾರಂಗತನಾದ ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ಸಂತೋಷಪಡಿಸಲಿ? ನನ್ನ ಬಳಿ ಒಂದು ಧನಸ್ಸೂ ದಿವ್ಯ ಬಾಣಗಳ ಸಮೂಹವೂ ಇದೆ. ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವುದನ್ನು ಕೊಡಲಿ, ಹೇಳು ಎಂದನು.

Parashurama said: I have given away all my wealth to suppliants, I have given all the land to my gurus, and now there is not even a betel-nut in my hand. O master of the scriptures, how shall I make you happy? I have only this one bow and a host of divine arrows. Tell me clearly which of these I should give you, O Kumbhasambhava (Drona).

ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ದ್ರೋಣನು 'ನನಗೆ ವಿದ್ಯೆಯೇ ನಿಜವಾದ ಧನ, ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ದಿವ್ಯಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳನ್ನೇ ದಯಪಾಲಿಸು' ಎಂದನು. ಪರಶುರಾಮನು ವಾರುಣ, ವಾಯವ್ಯ, ಆಗ್ನೇಯ, ಪೌರಂದರ ಮುಂತಾದ ಪ್ರಧಾನ ಅಸ್ತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟನು. ಪರಶುರಾಮನ ಬೀಳ್ಕೊಂಡ ದ್ರೋಣನು, ತನ್ನ ಸಹಪಾಠಿಯಾದ ಗೆಳೆಯ ದ್ರುಪದನು ಛತ್ರಾವತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜ್ಯವಾಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾನೆಂದು ಕೇಳಿ ಆ ಪಟ್ಟಣಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದನು. ಅರಮನೆಯ ಬಾಗಿಲಲ್ಲಿ ನಿಂತು, 'ನಿಮ್ಮ ಗೆಳೆಯ ದ್ರೋಣನೆಂಬ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ಬಂದಿದ್ದಾನೆ ಎಂದು ನಿಮ್ಮ ರಾಜನಿಗೆ ತಿಳಿಸು' ಎಂದು ಪಡಿಯಣನನ್ನು (ದ್ವಾರಪಾಲಕ) ಕರೆದು ಹೇಳಿದನು.

Then Drona said, 'For me learning itself is true wealth, so grant me the divine weapons.' Parashurama gave him the chief weapons, the Varuna, Vayavya, Agneya, Paurandara and others. Taking his leave of Parashurama, Drona heard that his old classmate and friend Drupada was ruling at Chatravati, came to that city, stood at the palace gate, called the gatekeeper (padiyana) and said, 'Tell your king clearly that his friend, the brahmin named Drona, has come.'

ಪಡಿಯಣನು ಆ ಮಾತನ್ನು ತಿಳಿಸಲು, ರಾಜ್ಯವೆಂಬ ಮದ್ಯಪಾನದ ಮದದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಳುಗಿದ್ದ ದ್ರುಪದನು, ಗರ್ವವೆಂಬ ಗ್ರಹ ಹಿಡಿದ ಚಿತ್ತದಿಂದ, ಯಾವ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯತನವೂ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹೀಗೆ ನುಡಿದನು: 'ಯಾರಿಗೆ ಇಷ್ಟು ಭ್ರಮೆ? ದ್ರೋಣನೆಂಬವನು ಯಾವನು? ಒಬ್ಬ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣನೇ? ಹೇಳು, ಅವನು ನನಗೆ ಗೆಳೆಯನೇ? ಅಂಥವನನ್ನು ಹೊರಗೆ ತಳ್ಳಿರಿ, ನಾನು ಅವನನ್ನು ಅರಿಯೆ' ಎಂದನು.

When the gatekeeper conveyed this, Drupada, who was intoxicated with the wine of kingship and whose mind was seized by the demon of arrogance, spoke in the assembly without any nobility: 'Who is so deluded? What is this Drona, a mere brahmin? Tell me, is he a friend to me? Push him out, I do not know such a man.'

ಪಡಿಯಣನು ಆ ಮಾತುಗಳನ್ನು ಬಂದು ತಿಳಿಸಲು, ದ್ರೋಣನು ಒತ್ತಾಯದಿಂದ ಒಳಗೆ ಹೊಕ್ಕು ದ್ರುಪದನನ್ನು ಕಂಡನು. ಆಗ ದ್ರುಪದನು ಪರಿಹಾಸದಿಂದ ಹೇಳಿದನು: 'ನೀವೂ ನಾವೂ ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದೆವೆಂಬುದನ್ನು ನಾನು ಅರಿಯೆ, ನೀನು ಎಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡೆಯೋ? ರಾಜನಿಗೂ ಒಬ್ಬ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣನಿಗೂ ಎಲ್ಲಿಯ ಗೆಳೆತನ? ಹೀಗೆ ನಾಚಿಕೆಯಿಲ್ಲದವರಾಗುವರೇ ಮನುಷ್ಯರು?' ಎಂದು ದ್ರೋಣನನ್ನು ಕಡುನಾಚಿಕೆಗೆ ಒಳಪಡಿಸಿದನು.

When the gatekeeper conveyed those words, Drona forced his way in and saw Drupada. Then Drupada said mockingly: 'I do not recall that you and I studied together, brother; where did you see that? What friendship can there be between a king and a man of the brahmin race? Do men become so utterly shameless?' With such words the Drupada put Kumbhasambhava (Drona) to deep shame.

ಅಷ್ಟು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಲ್ಲದೆ, 'ಈ ನಾಚಿಕೆಯಿಲ್ಲದ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣನನ್ನು ತಳ್ಳಿ ಕಳೆಯಿರಿ' ಎಂದನು. ಆಗ ದ್ರೋಣನು ಹೀಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದನು: ಮಾತು ತೊದಲುವುದು, ಮುಖದಲ್ಲಿ ವಕ್ರಚೇಷ್ಟೆ ಕಾಣಿಸುವುದು, ಮಾತುಗಳಿಗೆ ಎಡೆಗೊಡದೆ ಇರುವುದು, ನುಡಿ ಬಾಂಧವ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮರೆಸುವುದು; ಇವೆಲ್ಲ ಹೆಂಡ ಕುಡಿದವರ ರೀತಿ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಸಿರಿ ಒದಗಿಬಂದಾಗಲೂ ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಹೀಗೆ ಆಗುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಸಿರಿಯೂ ಹೆಂಡವೂ ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವು ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ಈಗ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಂಡೆ ಎಂದನು.

Not content with that, Drupada said, 'Throw out this shameless brahmin.' Then Drona said: speech grows slurred, the face shows odd contortions, one gives no room to others' words, and one's words make one forget kinship, these are the ways of those who have drunk liquor; in just this way wealth too comes upon a man. Without any doubt I now clearly understand that wealth and liquor were born together.

ಈ ಅವಮಾನವನ್ನು ಸಹಿಸಲಾರದೆ ದ್ರೋಣನು ಶಪಥ ಮಾಡಿದನು: ದುಷ್ಟನಿಗೆ ನೊಣಕ್ಕೆ ಕಸದ ರಾಶಿಯೇ ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠ ಎನ್ನುವಂತೆ, ಇಂಥ ನಿನ್ನದು ಎಂಥ ಪರಾಕ್ರಮ! ಜೊತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಓದಿದ ಒಂದು ಗೆಳೆತನದ ಸಲುಗೆಗಾಗಿ ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು ಕೊಲ್ಲುವುದು ನನಗೆ ಆಗದು. ಆದರೆ ಈ ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ತಿರಸ್ಕರಿಸಿದ ನಿನ್ನನ್ನು, ನನ್ನ ಶಿಷ್ಯರಿಂದ ನಿರಾಯಾಸವಾಗಿ, ಗಾಬರಿಯಾಗುವಂತೆ ಕಟ್ಟಿಸದೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ, ನಾನು ಸುಮ್ಮನೆ ಮೀಸೆ ಹೊತ್ತೆನೇ? (ಗಂಡಸ್ತನವೇ ಸುಳ್ಳಾಗುತ್ತದೆ) ಎಂದನು.

Unable to bear the insult, Drona vowed: 'As to a fly upon a wicked man a heap of rubbish seems best, what valour is this of yours! For the sake of one old bond of having studied together, I cannot bring myself to kill you; but you who have scorned me in this assembly, if I do not get you bound by my pupils, easily and to your utter terror, then have I borne this moustache for nothing?' (that is, his manhood itself would be false).
