ಹಲಗಲಿ ಬೇಡರು Halagali Bedaru

ಒಂದು ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಕಾಲ ಬಂದಿತು ನೋಡಿ. ವಿಲಾಯಿತಿಯಿಂದ ಕುಂಪಣಿ ಸರ್ಕಾರ ಆದೇಶ ಕಳಿಸಿತು: ಎಲ್ಲ ಜನರ ಮೇಲೆ ಜೋರು ಮಾಡಿ ಅವರ ಆಯುಧಗಳನ್ನು ಕಸಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳಿ ಎಂದು. ಹಲಗಲಿಯ ಪೂಜೇರಿ ಹನುಮ, ಬಾಲ, ಜಡಗ, ರಾಮ, ಈ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಮಂದಿ ಒಟ್ಟಾಗಿ ಸೇರಿ, 'ನಮ್ಮ ಕೈಯ ಆಯುಧ ಕೊಡಬಾರದು; ಆಯುಧ ಹೋದರೆ ಜೀವ ಸತ್ತಂತೆ; ಜಗಳ ಮಾಡಿ ಮುಗಿಸುತ್ತೇವೆ' ಎಂದು ಒಳಗೊಳಗೆ ವಚನ ಕೊಟ್ಟರು. ಆದೇಶ ತಂದ ಕಾರಕೂನನ ಕೆನ್ನೆಗೆ ಹೊಡೆದರು, ಸಿಪಾಯಿ ನೆಲಕ್ಕೆ ಬಿದ್ದ. ಈ ದುಃಖದ ಸುದ್ದಿ ಸಾಹೇಬನಿಗೆ ತಲುಪಿತು.

An evil hour arrives. From England the Company government orders that everyone's weapons be seized by force. The four men of Halagali, Pujeri Hanuma, Bala, Jadaga and Rama, secretly pledge that they will never give up their arms (to lose one's weapon is to lose one's life), strike the clerk and fell the sepoy who brought the order, and the grim news reaches the Saheb.

ಆದೇಶ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ಸಾಹೇಬ ಸಿಟ್ಟಿನಿಂದ ಕೈಮುಂಗೈ ಕಚ್ಚಿಕೊಂಡ. ಕುದುರೆ ಸವಾರರ ಗುಂಪು ಸೇರಿ ಹಲಗಲಿಯ ಬುಡಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದು ಮುಟ್ಟಿತು. ಒಳಗಿನ ಜನ ಮುಂಗಾರು ಸಿಡಿಲು ಸಿಡಿದಂತೆ ಗುಂಡು ಹಾರಿಸಿದರು. ಹೊರಗಿನ ಜನ ಗುಂಡಿಗೆ ಸಿಲುಕಿ ಹಿಂದೆ ಸರಿದು ನಿಂತರು. 'ಬೇಗ ಕಾಗದ ಬರೆದು ಕಳಿಸಿ, ಇನ್ನಷ್ಟು ದಂಡು ಬರಲಿ' ಎಂದು ಸುದ್ದಿ ಹೋಯಿತು; ತಯಾರಾಗಿ ಜಲ್ದಿ ಸೈನ್ಯ ಹಲಗಲಿಗೆ ಬಂದಿತು.

The Saheb who gave the order bites his wrist in rage. A force of horsemen reaches the foot of Halagali; the men within fire like the first monsoon thunderbolt, and those outside fall back. A letter is hurriedly written calling for more troops, and a ready army marches swiftly on Halagali.

ಸೈನ್ಯ ಬೆನ್ನಟ್ಟಿ ಎಲ್ಲರನ್ನೂ ಕಡಿಯಿತು, ಯಾರೂ ಉಳಿಯದಂತೆ. ನಡುವೆ ಹಾಕಿಕೊಂಡು ಕರುಣೆ ಇಲ್ಲದೆ ಗುಂಡು ಹೊಡೆದರು. ಹೆಬಲಕ ಸಾಬ ಅಗಸಿಗೆ ಬಂದು ಬುದ್ಧಿಮಾತು ಹೇಳಿದ: 'ಒಪ್ಪಿಗೆ ಕೊಡುತ್ತೇವೆ, ಮಾತು ಕೇಳಿ, ಸಾಯಲು ಹೋಗಬೇಡಿ'. ಆ ಮಾತಿಗೆ ನಂಬಿಕೆ ಬರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಜಡಗ ಹೇಳಿದ: 'ಇವರು ವಿಶ್ವಾಸಘಾತ ಮಾಡಿದವರು, ಮೋಸ ಮಾಡಿ ನಮ್ಮ ದೇಶ ಗೆದ್ದವರು, ಇವರನ್ನು ಹೊಡೆಯಿರಿ'. ಹನುಮ ಒಂದು ಗುಂಡಿಗೆ ಕಾರ ಸಾಹೇಬನ ತಲೆ ಹಾರಿಸಿದ. ಊರು ಲೂಟಿ ಆಯಿತು; ಗುಂಡು ಭರಪೂರ ಸುರಿಯಿತು. ಭೀಮ ಐನೂರು ಮಂದಿಗೆ ಎದುರಾದ, ಬಾಲ ಕಸರತ್ತು ತೋರಿ ಕುದುರೆ ಕಡಿದ, ರಾಮನ ಕಡಿತದಿಂದ ಕಾಲುವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ರಕ್ತ ಹರಿಯಿತು. ಕೊನೆಗೆ ಈ ನಾಲ್ವರು ಕಡಿದಾಡಿ ಮಡಿದರು.

The army pursues and cuts down mercilessly. Hebalaka Saheb comes to the gate and counsels surrender (we will grant terms, do not go to your deaths), but trusting no traitor's word Jadaga refuses, saying these men won our land by treachery. Hanuma blows off the Kara Saheb's head with a single shot; the town is plundered amid a hail of bullets. Bhima faces five hundred, Bala displays his prowess felling horses, Rama's blows make blood run in the channel, and at last the four die fighting.

ಸಾವಿರ ಸೈನಿಕರಿಗೆ ಒಬ್ಬೊಬ್ಬ ಎದುರಾಗಿ 'ಕಡಿಯಿರಿ ಕಡಿಯಿರಿ' ಎಂದು ಕೂಗುತ್ತಾ ಹೋರಾಡಿದರು. ಹೀಗೆ ಹಲಗಲಿಯ ಬಂಟರು ನಾಲ್ಕು ಮಂದಿ ಜನರ ಕಣ್ಣ ಮುಂದೆಯೇ ಕಡಿದಾಡಿ ಪ್ರಾಣ ತೆತ್ತರು.

Each man stands against a thousand soldiers, roaring 'cut, cut them down', and so the four warriors of Halagali fall fighting before the eyes of all.

ಕೊಡಲಿ, ಕೋರೆ, ಕಬ್ಬಿಣ, ಮೊಸರು, ಬೆಣ್ಣೆ, ಹಾಲು, ಉಪ್ಪು, ಎಣ್ಣೆ, ಅರಿಸಿಣ, ಜೀರಿಗೆ, ಅಕ್ಕಿ, ಸಕ್ಕರೆ, ಬೆಲ್ಲ, ತಂಬಿಗೆ, ಮಂಗಳಸೂತ್ರ, ಬೀಸುಕಲ್ಲು, ಎಲ್ಲವೂ ಹೋದವು. ಎಷ್ಟೆಂದು ವರ್ಣಿಸಲಿ; ಊರೆಲ್ಲ ಹಾಳಾಯಿತು. ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು, ಊರಿಗೆ ಕೊಳ್ಳಿ ಇಟ್ಟು ಹಲಗಲಿಯನ್ನು ಸುಟ್ಟು ಬೂದಿ ಮಾಡಿದರು; ಎಳ್ಳಷ್ಟೂ ಗುರುತು ಉಳಿಯಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಕಂಡಷ್ಟನ್ನು ವರ್ಣಿಸಿ ಹೇಳಿದೆ. ಕುರ್ತಕೋಟಿಯ ಕಲ್ಮೇಶನ ದಯೆಯಿಂದ ಈ ಹಾಡನ್ನು ಹಾಡಿದೆ ಎಂದು ಲಾವಣಿಕಾರ ಮುಗಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ.

Axe, blade, iron, curd, butter, milk, salt, oil, turmeric, cumin, rice, sugar, jaggery, water-pot, the mangalsutra, the grinding stone, all are taken. The whole village is ruined beyond words. Looting what they find and setting torches to it, they burn Halagali to ashes, leaving not the slightest trace. I have sung only what was seen, and by the grace of Kalmesha of Kurtakoti I have sung this song, the balladeer concludes.
