ಛಲಮನೆ ಮೆರೆವೆಂ Chalamane Mereven

ಭೀಷ್ಮರು ದುರ್ಯೋಧನನಿಗೆ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ: ನಿನಗೆ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದನ್ನು ಬಯಸುವುದಾದರೆ, ಪಾಂಡವರನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪಿಸಿ ಸಂಧಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡು ಮೊದಲಿನಂತೆಯೇ ಆಳುವ ಹಾಗೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. ನಾನು ಹೇಳಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಒಪ್ಪದಿದ್ದರೆ ಅವರು ಸುಮ್ಮನಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ; ನೀನೂ ನನ್ನ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಮೀರದೆ ನಡೆದುಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು. ಈ ಮಾತು ಕೇಳಿ ದುರ್ಯೋಧನ ಹುಸಿನಗೆ ನಕ್ಕನು.

Bhishma counsels Duryodhana: if you wish well for yourself, I shall reconcile the Pandavas, make a treaty, and arrange for you to rule as before. If you refuse my word they will not stay quiet, and you too must abide by what I say. Hearing this, Suyodhana (Duryodhana) gives a faint smile.

ಅಜ್ಜಾ, ನಿಮಗೆ ನಮಸ್ಕಾರ ಮಾಡಿ ಹೋಗಲು ಬಂದೆನಷ್ಟೇ. ಶತ್ರುಗಳಾದ ಪಾಂಡವರೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂಧಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ನಾನು ಬಂದಿದ್ದೇನೆಯೇ? ಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಂಧಿಯ ಮಾತೇ ಬೇಡ; ಅಜ್ಜಾ, ಹೇಳಿ, ನನಗೆ ಮಾಡಬೇಕಾದ ಕೆಲಸ ಯಾವುದು?

Grandsire, I came only to bow to you and take my leave; did I come to arrange a treaty with my enemies, the Pandavas? In battle there is no question of peace, grandsire; tell me, what task should be mine?

ನಾನು ನೆಲಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಹೋರಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದು ಭಾವಿಸಿದ್ದೀರಾ? ಇಲ್ಲ, ಪಾಂಡವರ ಮೇಲಿನ ಛಲಕ್ಕಾಗಿಯೇ ಹೋರಾಡುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಈ ನೆಲ ಪಾಳುಬಿದ್ದಿರಲಿ. ಕರ್ಣನನ್ನು ಕೊಲ್ಲಿಸಿದ ಈ ನೆಲದೊಂದಿಗೆ ನಾನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಸೇರಿ ಬಾಳುತ್ತೇನೆಯೇ?

Do you think I fight for the land? No, I fight against the sons of Pandu out of pride (chala). Let this land lie waste. Shall I again share my life with this land, which caused Karna, the son of the Sun, to be slain?

ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಿಯ ಗೆಳೆಯ ಕರ್ಣ ಮತ್ತು ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಿಯ ತಮ್ಮ ದುಶ್ಯಾಸನ, ಇವರಿಬ್ಬರನ್ನು ಕೊಂದ ಅರ್ಜುನ-ಭೀಮರು ಬದುಕಿರುವವರೆಗೂ, ನನ್ನ ಮೈಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಾಣವಿರುವವರೆಗೂ ನಾನು ಸಂಧಿಯನ್ನು ಒಲ್ಲೆನು (ಬಯಸೆನು). ಮೊದಲು ಆ ಇಬ್ಬರನ್ನೂ ಕೊಂದು, ಆಮೇಲೆ ಯುಧಿಷ್ಠಿರನೊಂದಿಗೆ ಸಂಧಿ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡರೆ ನನ್ನ ದುಃಖ ಆರದೇ ಆಗದು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುವೆನೇ? (ಸಂಧಿ ಇಲ್ಲವೇ ಇಲ್ಲ.)

As long as Partha (Arjuna) and Bhima, who slew my dear friend (Karna) and my dear brother (Dushyasana), are alive, and as long as my breath remains in my body, grandsire, I will not consent to peace. First I shall kill those two; only after killing them, were I to make a truce with renowned Yudhishthira (the son of Yama), would my grief be eased? (Never.)

ನನ್ನ ಜೊತೆ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ನೂರು ಜನ ಸಹೋದರರು ಪಾಂಡವರ ಎದುರು ಹೋರಾಡಿ ಸತ್ತರೆ ನನಗೆ ಕೋಪ ಉಕ್ಕುತ್ತದೆ. ಸತ್ತವರು ಮತ್ತೆ ಹುಟ್ಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಪಾಂಡವರನ್ನು ಇರಿದು ಛಲವನ್ನೇ ಮೆರೆಯುತ್ತೇನೆ.

When my hundred brothers, born with me, fought face to face and died, anger surged within me. The dead do not rise again. Therefore, striking down the Pandavas, I will show my pride (chala) and nothing else.

ಅಜ್ಜಾ, ನಾನು ಹೋರಾಡದೆ ಇರೆನು. ಇಂದಿನ ಈ ಒಂದೇ ಯುದ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಪಾಂಡವರು ಗೆಲ್ಲಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ನಾನು ಸೋಲಲಿ, ಅದರಿಂದ ಪಾಂಡವರಿಗೆ ಭೂಮಿ ದೊರೆಯಲಿ; ಇಲ್ಲವೇ ನಾನು ಗೆದ್ದರೆ ಕೌರವನಾದ ನನಗೆ ಈ ಭೂಮಿ ದೊರೆಯಲಿ. (ಒಂದು ಕಡೆ ತೀರ್ಮಾನವಾಗಲಿ.)

I will not refrain from fighting, grandsire. Let it be settled in this one day's battle, either the Pandavas prevail or I do; thereby the earth falls to the Pandavas, or else it falls to the Kaurava (Duryodhana).
