ಅಗ್ನಿಭೂತಿ ವಾಯುಭೂತಿಯರ ಕಥೆ Agnibhuti Vayubhutiyara Kathe

ವಡ್ಡಾರಾಧನೆ ಎಂದರೆ ವೃದ್ಧರ (ಹಿರಿಯ ಯತಿಗಳ) ಆರಾಧನೆ. ತಪಸ್ಸಿಗೆ ಕುಳಿತ ಯತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಸಿವು, ನೀರಡಿಕೆ, ಶೀತ ಮುಂತಾದ ಬಾಧೆಗಳಾಗುತ್ತವೆ. ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಹನೆ ಮೂಡಿಸಲು ಹಿರಿಯರು ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದರು. ಆ ಕಥೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮೊದಲನೆಯದಾದ ಸುಕುಮಾರಸ್ವಾಮಿಯ ಕಥೆಯ ಆರಂಭದ ಭಾಗವೇ ಈ ಪಾಠ.

Vaddaradhane, a large old-Kannada collection of tales, is the first prose work in Kannada. Elders told stories of righteous heroes to build endurance in ascetics. This lesson is the opening part of the first of those tales, the story of Sukumaraswamy.

ಜಂಬೂದ್ವೀಪದ ಭರತಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ವತ್ಸ ನಾಡಿನ ಕೌಸಂಬಿ ಎಂಬ ಪಟ್ಟಣದ ಅರಸ ಅತಿಬಲ. ಅವನ ಮಂತ್ರಿ ಸೋಮಶರ್ಮ, ಅವನ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಕಾಶ್ಯಪಿ. ಇವರ ಇಬ್ಬರು ಮಕ್ಕಳಾದ ಅಗ್ನಿಭೂತಿ ಮತ್ತು ವಾಯುಭೂತಿ ತಂದೆತಾಯಿ ಹೇಳಿದ್ದನ್ನು ಕೇಳದೆ, ವೇದ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ಓದದೆ, ತಂದೆ ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಿದ ಹಣವನ್ನು ಪೋಲುಮಾಡುತ್ತ ಏಳು ದುರ್ಗುಣಗಳಲ್ಲಿ (ಸಪ್ತವ್ಯಸನ) ಮುಳುಗಿದ್ದರು.

In Kausambi of the Vatsa land, the king was Atibala. His minister Somasharma's wife was Kashyapi, and their two sons Agnibhuti and Vayubhuti disobeyed their parents, studied no Vedas or scriptures, wasted the wealth their father earned, and were sunk in the seven vices.

ಸೋಮಶರ್ಮ ಸತ್ತಮೇಲೆ ಅರಸ ಮಕ್ಕಳನ್ನು ಕರೆಸಿ ಸತ್ಕರಿಸಿ, ಸಮಾಧಾನಪಡಿಸಿ, ಕೆಲವು ದಿನಗಳ ನಂತರ ನೀವು ಯಾವ ವಿದ್ಯೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬಲ್ಲಿರಿ ಎಂದು ಕೇಳಿದನು. ಮಕ್ಕಳಿಗೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಗೊತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ; ತಲೆ ತಗ್ಗಿಸಿ, ಮಾತನಾಡದೆ, ಕಣ್ಣೀರು ತುಂಬಿ ನೆಲವನ್ನು ಬರೆಯುತ್ತ ಕುಳಿತರು. ಇವರು ಏನೂ ಓದಿಲ್ಲ, ಸಪ್ತವ್ಯಸನಿಗಳು ಎಂದು ಸಭೆ ತಿಳಿಯಿತು; ಅರಸ ಅವರನ್ನು ಕಳುಹಿಸಿ ಮಂತ್ರಿಪದವಿಯನ್ನು ಬೇರೆಯವರಿಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟನು.

After Somasharma's death the king honoured the sons with bath, robes and betel, and consoled their grief. When later he asked what learning they knew, they bowed their heads, said nothing, and sat with eyes full of tears scratching the ground. The court realised they knew nothing and were sunk in vice, so the king sent them away and gave the minister's post to a kinsman.

ಈ ಅವಮಾನದಿಂದ ಬೇಸತ್ತ ಮಕ್ಕಳು, ಭಿಕ್ಷೆ ಬೇಡಿಯಾದರೂ ಸರಿ, ಇನ್ನಾದರೂ ಓದುತ್ತೇವೆ ಎಂದು ತಾಯಿಗೆ ಹೇಳಿದರು. ತಾಯಿ ಕಾಶ್ಯಪಿ, ಮಗಧ ನಾಡಿನ ರಾಜಗೃಹದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಅಣ್ಣ ಸೂರ್ಯಮಿತ್ರ ಎಲ್ಲ ವಿದ್ಯೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ಬಲ್ಲ ಮಂತ್ರಿ ಇದ್ದಾನೆ ಎಂದು, ಒಂದು ಓಲೆ (ಪತ್ರ) ಬರೆಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟು, ಮಾವನ ಬಳಿ ಹೋಗಿ ಓದಿರಿ ಎಂದು ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದಳು. ಮಕ್ಕಳು ತಾಯಿಯನ್ನು ಬೀಳ್ಕೊಂಡು ಕೆಲ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ರಾಜಗೃಹವನ್ನು ಸೇರಿದರು.

Stung by the humiliation, the sons turned earnest and told their mother that they would now study even if they had to beg. Kashyapi said her own brother Surya-mitra, minister of king Subala in Rajagriha of Magadha, knew all branches of learning. She had a letter written, placed it in their hands, and sent them to study under their uncle. After taking leave of their mother they reached Rajagriha in a few days.

ಸೂರ್ಯಮಿತ್ರ ಓಲೆ ಓದಿದನು. ತನ್ನ ಸೋದರಳಿಯಂದಿರೆಂದು ತಿಳಿದು, ಸಲುಗೆ (ಪಸರ) ಕೊಟ್ಟರೆ ಇವರು ಮೊದಲಿನಂತೆ ಸೊಕ್ಕಿ ಹಾಳಾಗುತ್ತಾರೆ ಎಂದು ಯೋಚಿಸಿದನು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ, ನನಗೆ ಕಾಶ್ಯಪಿ ಎಂಬ ತಂಗಿ ಇಲ್ಲ, ಸೋಮಶರ್ಮ ಎಂಬ ಮೈದುನನೂ ಇಲ್ಲ, ನಾನು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮಾವನಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಹೇಳಿದನು. ನೀವು ಬರೀ ವಿದ್ಯಾರ್ಥಿಗಳಾಗಿ ಬಂದಿದ್ದರೆ, ಭಿಕ್ಷೆ ಬೇಡಿ, ಬಡ ಬಟ್ಟೆ ತೊಟ್ಟು, ಹಗಲಿರುಳು ಆಲಸ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆಯಿಂದ ಓದುವುದಾದರೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಓದಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ ಎಂದನು.

Surya-mitra read the letter, recognised them as his sister's sons, and thought that if he indulged them they would grow proud and ruin themselves as before. So he said he had no sister called Kashyapi, no brother-in-law Somasharma, that Surya-mitra was merely his name and he was not their uncle. He said he would teach them only if they came as plain students, begged their bread, wore poor clothes, and studied day and night without idleness.

ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಸಂತೋಷದಿಂದ ಒಪ್ಪಿ, ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ದಿನ ನೋಡಿ ವಿದ್ಯೆಯನ್ನು ಆರಂಭಿಸಿದರು. ಸೂರ್ಯಮಿತ್ರ ಹಗಲಿರುಳು ಕಠಿಣವಾಗಿ ಓದಿಸಿದನು. ಏಳೆಂಟು ವರ್ಷಗಳೊಳಗೆ ನಾಲ್ಕು ವೇದ, ಆರು ಅಂಗ, ಹದಿನೆಂಟು ಧರ್ಮಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ, ತರ್ಕ, ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ, ಛಂದಸ್ಸು, ಅಲಂಕಾರ, ಕಾವ್ಯ-ನಾಟಕ, ಜ್ಯೋತಿಷ, ವೈದ್ಯ ಮುಂತಾದ ಎಲ್ಲ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳನ್ನೂ ಕಲಿತು ಪಂಡಿತರಾದರು.

The sons accepted gladly as a great favour and began their studies on an auspicious day. Surya-mitra taught them strictly, day and night, and within seven or eight years made them masters of the four Vedas, the six Angas, the eighteen Dharmashastras, logic, grammar, prosody, rhetoric, poetics, drama, astrology, medicine and all such sciences, turning them into scholars.

ಓದು ಮುಗಿದ ಮೇಲೆ ಸೂರ್ಯಮಿತ್ರ ನಿಜ ಹೇಳಿದನು: ನೀವು ನನ್ನ ತಂಗಿಯ ಮಕ್ಕಳು, ಸೋದರಳಿಯಂದಿರು; ಸಲುಗೆ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದರೆ ಮೊದಲಿನಂತೆ ಸೊಕ್ಕಿ ಹಾಳಾಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದಿರಿ, ಅದಕ್ಕೇ ಬಿಡಿಸಿ ಓದಿಸಿದೆ, ಬೇಸರಿಸದಿರಿ ಎಂದು ಉಡುಗೆ, ತೊಡುಗೆ, ಸಂಬಳ ಕೊಟ್ಟು ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದನು. ಹಿರಿಯವ ಅಗ್ನಿಭೂತಿ ಮಾವ ಉಪಕಾರ ಮಾಡಿದನೆಂದು ಸಂತೋಷಪಟ್ಟನು; ಕಿರಿಯ ವಾಯುಭೂತಿ ಮಾವ ಎಂಟು ವರ್ಷ ಶತ್ರುವಿನಂತೆ ದಂಡಿಸಿದನೆಂದು ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಟ್ಟು ಮಾಡಿಕೊಂಡನು. ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ಕೌಸಂಬಿಗೆ ಮರಳಿ, ತಾಯಿಯನ್ನು ಕಂಡು, ರಾಜ ಅತಿಬಲನ ಸಭೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಪಾಂಡಿತ್ಯ ತೋರಿದರು. ಸಭೆ ಮೆಚ್ಚಿತು; ಅರಸ ಸಂತುಷ್ಟನಾಗಿ ತಂದೆಯ ಮಂತ್ರಿಪದವಿಯನ್ನು ಕೊಟ್ಟನು, ಅವರು ಗೌರವದಿಂದ ಸುಖವಾಗಿ ಬಾಳಿದರು.

When the learning was complete Surya-mitra revealed the truth: they were his sister's sons, his nephews; had he indulged them they would have grown proud and ruined themselves as before, so to make them worthy he had withheld all favour. Asking them not to resent it, he sent them off with clothes and wages. The elder, Agnibhuti, felt grateful and joyful; the younger, Vayubhuti, harboured anger, feeling the uncle had punished them like an enemy for eight years. Both returned to Kausambi, met their mother, and displayed their learning in king Atibala's court. The scholars praised them; the pleased king gave them their father's ministerial post, and they lived honoured and happy.
