શીલવંત સાધુને The Saint of Good Character (Shilvant Sadhune)

ખરો સાધુ એ જેનામાં શીલ - સારું ચારિત્ર્ય - હોય.

The poetess asks: who is a true saint? The answer - one who has 'shil', noble character. Saffron robes or beads do not make a saint; a true saint is known by virtue and conduct.

સાચા સાધુનું મન અને વચન બંને નિર્મળ-શુદ્ધ હોય.

A true saint's mind is nirmal - free of any stain. There is no pretence or deceit in his thought, speech or conduct. He does what he says, and never speaks to hurt another.

સાચો સાધુ પરમાર્થ માટે જીવે, અભિમાન ન રાખે.

A true saint lives not for self-interest but for the good of others - parmarth. He serves but keeps no pride. Love (prit) dwells in his heart and he loves all alike.

શીલ વિના ભક્તિ અધૂરી; શીલ જ સંતનું સાચું ઘરેણું.

Gangasati says many speak of knowledge and devotion, but true devotion lies in shil - in virtuous conduct. A saint without character, however learned, is incomplete; shil is the real ornament of a saint.
