Summary
A short verse form is a brief poem of just a few lines. In it the poet distils a large idea or deep feeling into very few words, so that the meaning touches the reader in a single flash - that is the charm of such poems. This lesson introduces three short forms: the doha, the muktak and the haiku.
The doha is an old and beloved form of Gujarati folk literature. It is a metrical couplet (two lines) that the people sing with ease. In very little space the doha distils an incident, a feeling or a piece of wisdom. Valour, devotion, affection, morality and the truths of life are themes that recur in dohas. A great effect from few words is the strength of the doha.
The muktak is an independent (mukt = free) short poem of four to six lines. Being 'free', it needs no surrounding context - it conveys a complete idea on its own. In it the poet distils a single thought, a vision of life or a pointed message. The muktaks in this lesson carry the idea that success does not come easily - true success lies not in outward show or grand buildings but in a person's effort and inner worth.
The haiku is a tiny verse form that originated in Japan and has flowered in Gujarati too. It is made of three lines and seventeen syllables in all (five-seven-five). A haiku usually captures in words a scene from nature or a fleeting moment, and from that small picture a larger feeling or meaning flashes out of itself. The haikus in this lesson capture natural scenes such as the sun's light glowing in a morning dewdrop and the moon appearing at the door after a lamp goes out.
Doha, muktak and haiku may differ in shape, but their core strength is one: a deep feeling in few words. These short forms teach that a poem need not be long to be good; an idea distilled into a few words sinks deeper into the reader's mind. Restraint, sharpness and suggestion are the special features of all three.
