જન્મોત્સવ The Birth Festival (Janmotsav)

મધરાતે મંદિરનો ઘંટ વાગે છે અને જન્મોત્સવ શરૂ થાય છે.

The story opens in the silent, dark hour of midnight. A bell rings in the temple and a god's birth-festival is celebrated. All around an air of joy and festivity arises; lamps glow.

ઉત્સવથી દૂર એક ખૂણે ફગફગિયો દીવો ધ્રૂજે છે.

Far from this glitter of celebration, in a corner a flickering lamp trembles. Its wavering flame barely pierces the surrounding dark. Here the story's tone shifts - in place of joy come loneliness and gloom.

એ જ રાતે એક ગરીબ જીવ વેદનાથી કણસે છે.

In that same dark a poor, luckless soul moans in pain; low cries escape from the suffering. While the world celebrates a god's birth, a human being writhes alone in his own anguish. This contrast pierces the reader's heart.

એક તરફ ઝાકઝમાળ ઉત્સવ, બીજી તરફ ગરીબીનું વેરાન વાસ્તવ.

The writer sets the glittering festival like brocade against the bare, desolate reality of poverty. On one side the joy of the festival, on the other hunger, loneliness and pain. Through this contrast the indifference of society is laid bare.

સાચો ઉત્સવ કરુણા અને માનવતામાં છે, માત્ર બાહ્ય દેખાવમાં નહીં.

The story asks: when someone close by is hungry and suffering, what does mere outward festivity mean? The true birth-festival lies in compassion and humanity. A joy celebrated with eyes shut to another's pain is incomplete - on this note the story ends.
