Summary
Lucas is fourteen and very popular at school. He has lots of friends from different groups, football on Mondays, skateboarding on Wednesdays. But one evening, sad because his dog is ill, he realises he does not know who to call about his real problems, despite knowing so many people.
The next day, Lucas talks to Emma at break. Unlike him, Emma does not have many friends but has one very close best friend, Chloe, since primary school. Emma explains they tell each other everything and Chloe senses her feelings instantly. She says one loyal friend is worth more than ten who do not truly know her. Lucas has never thought about friendship this way before.
The following week, Lucas argues with Hugo, a skating friend, after Hugo reveals one of his secrets to the group. They do not speak for three days. Lucas is unhappy, unable to understand why his friend betrayed his trust. Eventually Hugo apologises, admitting a true friend keeps secrets. Lucas accepts, realising a friend must be honest and respectful, not just fun.
After the argument, Lucas better understands true friendship. He spends less time pleasing everyone and more time with people who really matter: Emma, Hugo, and two loyal friends. He now believes a true friend listens, tells the truth even when difficult, and stays present during hard times. He would rather have five loyal friends than fifty acquaintances.
A month later, Lucas's dog needs surgery and he is very worried. That evening, Emma and Hugo come over unasked, bringing his favourite film and staying until his parents return with good news. Lucas realises his true friends came not because of a party invite, but because they knew he needed them. This, Emma says, is true friendship.
Today, Lucas still greets everyone at lunch, but now understands the difference between an acquaintance and a true friend. He writes in his journal that a friend is not someone who laughs with you at a party, but someone who stays after everyone else has left. He is grateful for Emma and Hugo, understanding that quality matters far more than quantity in friendship.
