Summary
Voltaire secondary school in Lyon organises a yearly exchange with a partner school in Delhi. This spring, fifteen sixth-form students leave for three weeks. The teacher explains that each student must keep a travel diary and write a final report in French about their experience, living with families and attending school with Indian students. Camille is excited, but Hugo is a little afraid to leave home comfort for three weeks.
After twelve hours of flying, the group lands in Delhi at night. Camille is struck by the heat and the noise of the horns. The next morning, everyone discovers the city in daylight: the bright colours of the markets, the smell of spices, cows walking calmly in the street. Hugo, still tired from jet lag, finds the city noisy at first but is already impressed by the family's kindness.
On the sixth day, the group heads to Rishikesh, a small town at the foot of the Himalayas known for extreme sports. Everyone wears a life jacket to go white-water rafting on the Ganges. Hugo, who usually hates thrills, is terrified before boarding, but from the first rapids he shouts with joy along with the others. In the afternoon, braver students even try rock climbing on the cliffs near the river while others rest and watch the mountains.
Back in Delhi, the French students spend three days at the partner school. Camille immediately notices differences: strict uniforms, longer school days and more compulsory subjects than in France. Yet the classroom atmosphere is just as warm and joyful as at home. During lunch, Indian students share their food and ask endless questions about Paris. Camille makes a friend, Ananya, and keeps messaging her after the trip.
On the last evening, each student reads part of their report aloud. Camille says this trip is the best experience of her life. Hugo is more nuanced: the first days were hard, everything was different, but the rafting changed something in him and the families' welcome was incredible. He would not say he loved everything, but he returns completely changed, and perhaps that is what matters most.
On the flight home, Camille rereads her diary and smiles, already thinking about how she will present her report to the class. For her, this trip proved you sometimes learn more in three weeks abroad than in a whole year of lessons. Even Hugo, despite his difficult start, admits he would recommend this exchange to any student ready to step outside their comfort zone.
