Nadia is sixteen and lives in Marseille. Her French teacher announces a project: each student must choose a community action. Nadia has never volunteered before, but she knows many families in her neighbourhood do not have enough to eat. Her classmate Ines mentions a food bank looking for volunteers on Saturdays. Nadia decides to sign up with her.

The following Saturday, Nadia arrives at the food bank with Ines. The manager explains they will sort tins and prepare bags for families in need. Nadia is nervous at first but soon gets to work. She speaks with an elderly lady who comes each week and thanks her warmly. By the end of the day, Nadia is tired but happy, understanding that volunteering gives back more than it takes.

After two months, Yanis reads his first book alone and runs to her shouting that he succeeded. Nadia is moved to tears; it is the best moment of her year.

The following year, Nadia hears about a charity organising a two-week humanitarian trip to Senegal to build a classroom in a small village. Excited but a little worried, she raises money through a charity market and a car wash with help from family and friends. She travels with ten other young volunteers, working daily under the sun to build the classroom walls, sharing meals each evening with villagers who welcome them generously.

She often tells friends that you do not need to be rich to give, just a little time and a big heart, and hopes to continue this work through university, perhaps even starting her own charity one day.
