In this lesson we learn to talk about free time activities in Spanish. We study leisure vocabulary: sports, entertainment, and cultural activities. We also learn three important grammar structures: IR A + infinitive for the near future, PODER + infinitive for possibility, and QUERER + infinitive for desire.

Essential free time vocabulary: jugar al fútbol (to play football), jugar al tenis (to play tennis), hacer deporte (to do sport), hacer yoga (to do yoga), ir al cine (to go to the cinema), ir a la playa (to go to the beach), escuchar música (to listen to music), leer (to read), chatear (to chat online), el fin de semana (the weekend), las vacaciones (the holidays), el club (the club).
IR A + infinitivo = futuro próximo. PODER + infinitivo = posibilidad. QUERER + infinitivo = deseo. PODER cambia o-ue: puedo, puedes, puede, podemos, podéis, pueden.
Grammar: IR A + infinitive expresses the near future or intention. It is formed with conjugated IR + a + infinitive. PODER + infinitive expresses possibility or ability. PODER has o-ue stem change: puedo, puedes, puede, podemos, podéis, pueden. QUERER + infinitive expresses desire.
Los jóvenes españoles juegan al fútbol, usan redes sociales y van al cine. En verano van a la playa. Los clubes son muy populares.
Culture: Spanish young people dedicate their free time to various activities. Football is the most popular sport among boys. Social networks and chatting online are very popular. At weekends, many young people go to the cinema, concerts, or shopping centres with their friends. In summer, beach holidays are an important family tradition. Sports and cultural clubs are also very popular. Free time reflects the energy and creativity of Spanish youth.
Recuerda: IR A + infinitivo para el futuro. PODER cambia o-ue. JUGAR al + deporte. HACER + deporte (sin al). Practica las tres estructuras.
For the exam: Practise the difference between IR A + infinitive (future: Voy a jugar) and the simple present (habit: Juego todos los días). Remember the PODER vowel change (o-ue): puedo, puedes, puede. For JUGAR, always use al before the sport: jugar al fútbol. For HACER, do not use al: hacer deporte, hacer yoga. In reading and listening exams, identify free time activities and IR A, PODER, QUERER structures.
