About the author

Unit 5 of NCERT Poorvi combines 'Kalakritiyon ka Bharat' (folk arts across states under Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat), the prose 'Hamara Bharat' celebrating India's natural and cultural wealth, and the poem 'National War Memorial' honouring fallen soldiers at New Delhi's 2019 monument.

Summary

In a school hall students gather for Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat. Renu says it teaches that we belong to one nation - unity in diversity makes India wonderful.

A teacher asks if students are ready to meet friends from across the country. They shout 'Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.' Renu explains the programme: we share one national bond, and diversity strengthens India.

Aakansha from Uttarakhand describes Aipan - white rice-flour paste on geru-red walls for festivals. Women draw mathematical designs based on tradition and nature on puja rooms and doorways.

Aakansha introduces Aipan folk art: white rice paste on brick-red walls coloured with geru, drawn on puja floors and walls and outside main doors during family functions. Women of the family create beautiful mathematical patterns rooted in culture and nature observation.

Priyaranjan from Odisha explains 4000-year-old Dhokra metal craft: clay figure, wax layer, second clay mould, fire melts wax, molten brass fills the space - lost-wax casting.

Priyaranjan's tribe practises Dhokra: shape clay, dry it, coat with wax, carve details, cover with clay, fire it so wax drains, pour molten brass scrap into the cavity, then break the outer clay to finish the metal figure.

Chitra from Kerala makes bowls and jewellery from polished coconut shells - biodegradable craft. Balamurali from Kondapalli carves soft-wood toys joined with makku paste and painted with natural dyes.

Chitra cleans and polishes coconut shells into household items and ornaments. Balamurali describes 400-year-old Kondapalli toys: carve hill wood in parts, join with tamarind-sawdust makku, detail, then colour with oils, vegetable dyes or enamel - themes from folk tales, animals and rural life.

Bharat is known worldwide as a land of wise and heroic people. Its rich diverse culture has attracted travellers since ancient times. People live in unison, showing unity in diversity.

Hamara Bharat opens by praising India as home of wisdom and heroism. Travellers have long been drawn to its varied culture. Indians live together harmoniously, presenting unity in diversity to the world.

India has rivers, lakes and high mountains; green forests shelter plants, insects, birds and animals. As citizens we must work hard so the nation prospers and stays respected globally.

The text celebrates Bharat's rivers, lakes, mountains and forests teeming with life. These blessings help the nation prosper and earn global respect. Inhabitants must continue working hard to ensure that prosperity endures.

In Delhi's heart the National War Memorial (2019) honours soldiers. Names and stones tell stories; an eternal flame glows silently for courage and sacrifice we must always remember.

The poem salutes the New Delhi National War Memorial established February 2019. It stands with pride; each etched name confides a story. Soldiers from battlefields, skies and oceans stood for Bharat. The eternal flame pays homage; sacrifice stays in blessed memory forever.

The memorial on 40 acres has four circles: Amar Chakra (immortality), Veerta Chakra (bravery), Tyag Chakra (sacrifice) and Rakshak Chakra (protection). Over 25,000 soldiers' names are inscribed.

Beyond the poem, the memorial spans forty acres with four concentric chakras - Amar, Veerta, Tyag and Rakshak - representing immortality, bravery, sacrifice and protection. More than twenty-five thousand fallen soldiers' names appear on its walls, inviting visitors to pay respect.
