दो कलाकार Do Kalakar

कहानी हॉस्टल की दो सहेलियों चित्रा और अरुणा की है, जो एक ही कमरे में रहती हैं। दोनों पक्की सहेलियाँ हैं, पर उनका स्वभाव और जीवन का मकसद बिल्कुल अलग है। चित्रा एक हुनरमंद चित्रकार है और दिन-रात अच्छे चित्र बनाकर बड़ी, दुनिया भर में मशहूर कलाकार बनना चाहती है। अरुणा का मन कला में नहीं, लोगों की सेवा में लगता है।

The story is about two friends, Chitra and Aruna, who live as roommates in a hostel. They are close friends, but their natures and life-goals are completely different. Chitra is a talented painter who works day and night, wishing to become a great, world-famous artist. Aruna's heart lies not in art but in service.

चित्रा हर घटना में बस चित्र बनाने की चीज़ ढूँढ़ती है; किसी का दुख देखकर भी वह पहले यही सोचती है कि इससे कितना सुंदर चित्र बनेगा। दूसरी ओर अरुणा का दिल बहुत नरम है। वह गरीब मज़दूरों और नौकरों के बच्चों को मुफ़्त पढ़ाती है, बीमारों की सेवा करती है और दूसरों के दुख में सच्चे मन से मदद करती है। चित्रा अरुणा के इस सेवा करने वाले स्वभाव को समय की बर्बादी समझती है।

Chitra looks in every event only for a subject to paint; even on seeing someone's grief, her first thought is how beautiful a picture it would make. Aruna, on the other hand, is tender-hearted. She teaches the children of poor labourers and servants for free, nurses the sick, and helps others in their sorrow with a sincere heart. Chitra regards Aruna's spirit of service as a waste of time.

एक बार अरुणा बाढ़ से दुखी लोगों की सेवा के लिए बाहर गई होती है। उसी समय चित्रा रास्ते में एक बहुत दुखद नज़ारा देखती है: एक भिखारिन सड़क पर मरी पड़ी है और उसके दो छोटे, अनाथ बच्चे माँ की लाश से लिपटकर रो रहे हैं। यह देखकर चित्रा का दिल दया से नहीं, बल्कि कलाकार की नज़र से भर जाता है। वह बच्चों की मदद करने के बजाय वहीं बैठकर उस नज़ारे का कच्चा चित्र (स्केच) बना लेती है।

Once, Aruna has gone away to serve flood victims. At that very time Chitra sees a heart-rending scene on the road: a beggar woman lying dead in the street, with her two small, orphaned children clinging to her body and weeping. On seeing this, Chitra's heart fills not with compassion but with an artist's eye. Instead of helping the children, she sits down and makes a sketch of the scene.

चित्रा उस कच्चे चित्र को बाद में एक सुंदर चित्र बना देती है और उसका नाम 'अनाथ' रखती है। इस चित्र को विदेश की एक प्रदर्शनी में रखा जाता है, जहाँ इसकी बहुत तारीफ़ होती है। इस चित्र की वजह से चित्रा को कई देशों में नाम, इनाम और मशहूरी मिलती है। उसका सपना पूरा हो जाता है और वह एक मशहूर कलाकार बन जाती है।

Chitra later turns that sketch into a beautiful painting and names it 'Anath' (Orphan). The painting is placed in an exhibition abroad, where it is greatly admired. Because of it, Chitra wins name, awards and fame in several countries. Her dream is fulfilled and she becomes a famous artist.

विदेश से लौटकर चित्रा दिल्ली में अपने चित्रों की प्रदर्शनी लगाती है। वहाँ अरुणा दो बच्चों को साथ लेकर आती है। चित्रा उन बच्चों को पहचान नहीं पाती और पूछती है कि ये कौन हैं। अरुणा 'अनाथ' नाम वाले चित्र की ओर इशारा करके बताती है कि ये वही दो अनाथ बच्चे हैं, जिन्हें उसने गोद लेकर माँ की तरह पाला है। यह सुनकर चित्रा हैरान रह जाती है। उसे समझ आता है कि उसने तो उन बच्चों का सिर्फ़ चित्र बनाकर नाम कमाया, पर असली कला तो अरुणा ने दिखाई, जिसने उनका जीवन ही सँवार दिया।

Returning from abroad, Chitra holds an exhibition of her paintings in Delhi. There Aruna arrives with two children. Chitra fails to recognise them and asks who they are. Pointing to the painting titled 'Anath', Aruna reveals that these are the very two orphaned children, whom she has adopted and raised like a mother. Hearing this, Chitra is stunned. She realises that she gained fame merely by painting those children, but the true art was shown by Aruna, who reshaped their very lives.
