दीपदान Deepdan

मेवाड़ के महान राणा संग्राम सिंह (राणा सांगा) की मौत के बाद चित्तौड़ में राजगद्दी को लेकर संकट खड़ा हो जाता है। राणा के भाई पृथ्वीराज का दासी-बेटा बनवीर सत्ता का बहुत लालची है और राज्य को हड़पना चाहता है। इसी लालच में वह राजा विक्रमादित्य को रात में सोते समय मार डालता है। अब सिर्फ़ छोटा बच्चा उदय सिंह ही असली वारिस बचा है, जिसकी देखभाल उसकी धाय माँ पन्ना करती है।

After the death of the great Maharana Sangram Singh (Rana Sanga) of Mewar, a crisis over the throne arises in Chittaur. Banbir, the illegitimate son of the Maharana's brother Prithviraj, is ambitious and greedy for power. To seize the kingdom he murders the ruler Vikramaditya in his sleep at night. Now the only true heir left is the young boy Udai Singh, who is cared for by his foster-mother, Panna Dhai.

अब बनवीर उदय सिंह को भी रास्ते से हटाना चाहता है, क्योंकि जब तक यह बच्चा ज़िंदा है, वह राजा नहीं बन सकता। वह 'दीपदान' त्योहार रचाता है। ऊपर से यह त्योहार सुंदर और धार्मिक दिखता है, पर इसका असली मक़सद यह है कि जब सब लोग त्योहार और दीयों में डूबे हों, तब वह चुपके से उदय सिंह को मार दे। सोना जैसे पात्र इस माहौल में उलझन और तनाव और बढ़ा देते हैं।

Banbir now wants to remove Udai Singh too, because as long as the boy lives he cannot become king. He organises the 'Deepdan' festival. On the surface it looks beautiful and religious, but its true aim is that while everyone is absorbed in the celebration and the lamps, he can quietly kill Udai Singh. Characters like Sona heighten the tension and moral confusion in this atmosphere.

पन्ना धाय समझदार और चौकन्नी है। वह बनवीर के इरादे को भाँप लेती है और समझ जाती है कि उदय सिंह की जान ख़तरे में है। वह बच्चे को त्योहार में नहीं जाने देती और उसे बचाने का उपाय सोचने लगती है। उसके मन में अपने मालिक के लिए वफ़ादारी, यानी अपने गुज़र चुके स्वामी राणा सांगा के लिए फ़र्ज़, सबसे ऊँचा है।

Panna Dhai is wise and alert. She senses Banbir's intentions and realises that Udai Singh's life is in danger. She does not let the boy go to the festival and begins to plan how to protect him. In her heart, loyalty to her late master Rana Sanga and her duty to the dynasty stand above everything else.

पन्ना महल के एक भरोसेमंद नौकर कीरत (कीरत बारी) की मदद लेती है। कीरत महल से जूठी पत्तलें उठाकर बाहर ले जाता है। पन्ना सोते हुए उदय सिंह को उसी टोकरी में जूठी पत्तलों के नीचे छिपा देती है, और कीरत उसे चुपके से महल के बाहर सुरक्षित ले जाता है। इस तरह असली राजकुमार बच निकलता है।

Panna takes the help of a trusted palace servant, Kirat (Kirat Bari), who carries the used leaf-plates out of the palace. Panna hides the sleeping Udai Singh in that very basket, beneath the dirty plates, and Kirat carries him safely out of the palace. In this way the real prince escapes.

अब सबसे कठिन पल आता है। पन्ना अपने ही बेटे चंदन को उदय सिंह के बिस्तर पर सुला देती है। माँ का दिल टूट जाता है, पर अपने फ़र्ज़ के आगे वह अपने प्यार को दबा देती है। बनवीर तलवार लेकर आता है और सोते हुए बच्चे को उदय सिंह समझकर मार डालता है। पन्ना अपनी आँखों के सामने अपने बेटे की हत्या होते देखती है, फिर भी राज्य को बचाने के लिए चुप रहती है।

Now comes the hardest moment. Panna lays her own son Chandan in Udai Singh's bed. A mother's heart breaks, but she crushes her love before her sense of duty. Banbir comes with his sword and, mistaking the sleeping boy for Udai Singh, kills him. Panna watches her own son being killed before her eyes, yet stays silent to protect the kingdom.

पन्ना के अनोखे कुर्बानी से मेवाड़ का असली वारिस उदय सिंह बच जाता है। (इतिहास में आगे चलकर वही उदय सिंह उदयपुर बसाते हैं और महाराणा प्रताप उन्हीं के बेटे हैं।) नाटक यह संदेश देता है कि फ़र्ज़ और देश के हित के आगे अपना स्वार्थ और अपना प्यार भी कुर्बान किया जा सकता है। 'दीपदान' सिर्फ़ एक त्योहार नहीं, बल्कि पन्ना का अपने बेटे रूपी दीये को अर्पित करना है।

Through Panna's matchless sacrifice, the true heir of Mewar, Udai Singh, is saved. (Historically, this same Udai Singh later founds Udaipur, and Maharana Pratap is his son.) The play conveys that before duty and the good of the nation even personal interest and a mother's love can be surrendered. 'Deepdan' is not merely a festival but Panna's offering of her own son, like a lamp, upon the altar of duty.
