Summary

Der Lehrer zeigt Fotos vom schmutzigen Schulhof. Die Klasse ist schockiert. Ueberall liegt Muell.

Mr. Schmidt shows the class a photo of the school yard. Plastic bottles, paper and old crisp packets are lying everywhere. He says: This is our school yard. What do you think about it? Sofia is shocked: This is really terrible! We must do something. Ben nods: Every day I see how students simply throw their rubbish on the ground. Mrs. Klein adds: Not only the school yard has this problem. Our streets, rivers and forests suffer from it too. Environmental pollution is a serious problem that affects us all.

Die Klasse spricht ueber Ursachen: Autos, Fabriken und Muell in der Natur sind Probleme.

The next day the class discusses the causes of environmental pollution. Tim asks: Why is our environment so polluted? Leila answers: Too many cars drive through the city and cause exhaust fumes. Maria adds: Factories release toxic chemicals into the rivers. That is very dangerous for fish and plants. Mr. Schmidt nods: In addition, people throw rubbish into nature. Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose. We must understand that every person bears responsibility for the environment.

Die Klasse plant Loesungen: Schulhof sauber machen, Muell trennen und Poster aufhaengen.

Now the class looks for solutions. Sofia suggests: We can clean the school yard on action day. Everyone brings gloves and rubbish bags. Ben has another idea: We should set up bins in the school for paper, plastic and glass. That way we can sort waste. Leila adds: We can also make posters and hang them in the school building to inform other students. Mr. Schmidt is enthusiastic: Excellent! You have great ideas. Let us make an action plan and invite everyone in the school to join in.

Am Aktionstag sammeln alle Schueler Muell, stellen Muelltonnen auf und haengen Poster auf.

Finally the action day has arrived! All students of class 9b have come. Mr. Schmidt hands out gloves and large rubbish bags. The students go to the school yard and collect rubbish. Ben finds many plastic bottles. Sofia collects paper and crisp packets. Tim and Leila set up new bins. Maria hangs colourful posters: Please do not throw away rubbish! and Protect our environment! After two hours the school yard is clean. Everyone is proud of their work. Mr. Schmidt says: You have done that wonderfully. Today you have done something important.

Nach zwei Wochen ist der Schulhof sauberer. Die Klasse ist stolz auf ihre Wirkung.

Two weeks after the action day the class observes the impact. Mr. Schmidt asks: What has changed? Sofia answers: The school yard is much cleaner than before. The new bins are being used. Ben adds: I have noticed that fewer students throw rubbish on the ground. Our posters have helped. Tim says: We have also planted two new trees. That is good for the air. Mr. Schmidt praises the class: You have proven that students can really make a difference. Environmental protection starts with ourselves. Keep it up!
