This lesson covers Konjunktiv II - the subjunctive mood. We learn to express wishes, dreams and hypotheses in German. Konjunktiv II is often formed with würde + Infinitiv, or with special forms of sein (wäre), haben (hätte) and the modal verbs (könnte, müsste, sollte, dürfte). Conditional sentences are especially important: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich lesen.

Konjunktiv II has three main patterns. First: würde + Infinitiv for most verbs (Ich würde gern reisen. Er würde mehr schlafen.). Second: special forms without würde - sein: wäre; haben: hätte; modal verbs: könnte, müsste, sollte, dürfte, wollte. Third: conditional sentences with wenn - wenn-clause in Konjunktiv II + main clause with würde or Konjunktiv form. Example: Wenn ich Geld hätte, würde ich reisen.

Im Deutschen benutzt man Konjunktiv II auch für Höflichkeit: Könnten Sie bitte helfen? Das klingt netter als Können Sie helfen?

In German culture it is polite to phrase wishes and requests using Konjunktiv II. "Könnten Sie mir helfen?" sounds much more polite than "Können Sie mir helfen?". In formal situations - at the office, in a shop, with unfamiliar adults - Konjunktiv II is often used for politeness. German young people often talk about future wishes: Was würdest du werden, wenn du könntest?

Exam tips: Memorise the base forms: wäre, hätte, könnte, müsste, sollte, dürfte, würde. For all other verbs use würde + Infinitiv. Practise conditional sentences with wenn: Wenn ich... wäre/hätte, würde ich... Note word order: in the wenn-clause the verb goes to the end; in the main clause würde is in second position.
