Sophie stands outside the food bank in her town at eight in the morning, feeling a little nervous on her first day as a volunteer. The Tafel is an organisation that collects still-good food and distributes it to people who have little money. The leader, Herr Roth, greets her warmly and shows her where the boxes are. Sophie soon realises the work is tiring but also meaningful.

Sophie chose this voluntary work because her grandmother was once poor herself and often told her about difficult times. Sophie reassures her that even two hours a week makes a difference.

One day Sophie meets a young man called Karim, who came to Germany from Syria two years ago and collects food from the Tafel every week. After a few weeks he tells her his story: he lost his family and had to flee alone. Sophie listens carefully and helps him fill out a form for a German course. Karim thanks her for listening and says he feels welcome. Sophie realises her voluntary work means more than just handing out food.

Not every day at the Tafel is easy. One Saturday far more people than expected turn up and there isn't enough bread for everyone. An elderly woman is upset that she must go home empty-handed. Sophie feels helpless and talks to Herr Roth, who calmly says this sometimes happens and that staying friendly and planning better next time matters most. Sophie makes a note to organise more donations for Saturdays.

Sophie has an idea to solve last Saturday's problem: a donation drive at her school. Her German teacher supports it immediately, and together with Lena and other classmates Sophie organises a collection week where students bring non-perishable food. By the end they have gathered over two hundred packets, which they deliver to the Tafel. Herr Roth is thrilled, calling it the biggest donation of the year, and Sophie feels she has truly made a difference.

Ein Jahr spaeter arbeitet Sophie immer noch bei der Tafel. Karim hilft jetzt auch als Freiwilliger.

A year has passed and Sophie still volunteers at the Tafel every Saturday. She has learned how to store food properly, how to talk to different people and how important teamwork is. Karim now speaks much better German and sometimes volunteers himself, telling Sophie she showed him that anyone can help no matter how small the contribution. Sophie writes a school essay about her experience, ending with the words that voluntary work has taught her more than any textbook.
