Summary

D'Artagnan, a poor but proud young Gascon nobleman, leaves home on an old horse to become a King's Musketeer, carrying a precious letter of introduction from his father to Monsieur de Tréville, the musketeers' captain.

In the town of Meung, a mysterious stranger mocks D'Artagnan and his horse. A fight breaks out; D'Artagnan is knocked unconscious by several men, and when he wakes he discovers his precious letter of introduction has been stolen.

D'Artagnan arrive à Paris et, par accident, blesse l'épaule déjà blessée d'Athos. Un duel est fixé entre eux.

In Paris, D'Artagnan rushes through the corridors after meeting Monsieur de Tréville and accidentally bumps into Athos's already-injured shoulder. Insulted, Athos challenges him to a duel at noon.

Rushing on, D'Artagnan accidentally offends Porthos by revealing his fake gold baldric, and then Aramis through an awkward misunderstanding. By the end of the day, he has three separate duels arranged, one after another, at the same spot.

The next day, just as the duel with Athos is about to begin, guards of Cardinal Richelieu arrive to arrest them, since duelling has been banned in Paris. Porthos and Aramis, who have also gathered for their duels, find themselves surrounded too.

Instead of duelling each other, D'Artagnan joins Athos, Porthos and Aramis, and the four fight side by side against the Cardinal's guards, winning decisively. This shared victory cements their friendship, giving birth to their famous motto: 'All for one, one for all!'
