Summary
A gentle young girl lives with her father, stepmother and two stepsisters, who treat her as a mere servant after her father remarries, giving her the hardest chores while she sleeps among the ashes near the fireplace, earning her the mocking nickname Cendrillon.
News arrives that the prince is holding a grand ball, and all noble young women are invited. Cendrillon's stepsisters mock her when she asks to attend, and she is left behind in tears as they depart for the palace.
A fairy godmother appears and transforms a pumpkin into a golden coach, mice into horses, a rat into a coachman, and lizards into footmen, and dresses Cendrillon in a beautiful gown with glass slippers, warning that the magic ends at midnight.
At the ball, Cendrillon's beauty captivates everyone, especially the prince, who dances with her all evening, ignoring every other guest, including her stepsisters who fail to recognise her.
As midnight strikes, Cendrillon flees the palace, losing one glass slipper on the steps as the magic reverses. The prince keeps the slipper, determined to find her again.
The prince searches the kingdom, trying the slipper on every young woman. When it finally fits Cendrillon perfectly, she marries the prince and, generously, forgives her stepsisters, later finding them good husbands at court.
