جینے کا سلیقہ Jeene ka Saleeqa (The Art of Living)

मुसन्निफ़ अपने कुछ मशहूर हम-असरों (समकालीनों) - जैसे डॉक्टर ज़ाकिर हुसैन, सर राज नायडू, मौलाना आज़ाद - को याद करते हैं, जो सेहतमंद, दिल-आवेज़ (दिलचस्प) गुफ़्तगू करने वाले और सलीक़ामंद थे। वे कहते हैं कि जो लोग ज़बान पर क़ुदरत रखते थे, वे मुर्तब (सुव्यवस्थित) दिमाग़ और रौशन-ख़याली की वजह से अपनी सोहबत को क़ीमती बना देते थे। अच्छी ज़िंदगी के लिए सेहत और दिलचस्प, भरोसेमंद दोस्तों की सोहबत बुनियादी ज़रूरत है।

The author recalls some famous contemporaries of his - such as Dr Zakir Hussain, Sir Raza Naidu, Maulana Azad - who were healthy, engaging conversationalists and had good manners. He says that those who commanded language well made their company valuable through their well-ordered minds and enlightened outlook. Health and the company of interesting, trustworthy friends form a basic requirement for a good life.

मुसन्निफ़ कहते हैं कि सेहत और अच्छी सोहबत के अलावा तीसरी ज़रूरी चीज़ 'बा-मक़सद काम' है। इस बारे में वे डॉक्टर ज़ाकिर हुसैन का एक ख़त उद्धृत करते हैं: 'काम बे-मक़सद नहीं होता; काम करके वक़्त काटने के लिए नाम नहीं, काम ख़ाली दिल गँवाने के लिए नाम नहीं, काम मुहब्बत है, काम इबादत है।' इसे समझाने के लिए वे दो मज़दूरों की मिसाल देते हैं जो पहाड़ पर पत्थर तोड़ रहे थे - एक ने पूछे जाने पर कहा 'देखते नहीं, अपनी क़िस्मत के पत्थर फोड़ रहा हूँ,' दुखी और ग़ुस्से से; दूसरे ने वही सवाल सुनकर ख़ुशी से जवाब दिया 'मैं एक गिरजा (इबादतगाह) की तामीर कर रहा हूँ।' मुसन्निफ़ कहते हैं कि यही नज़रिया, यही जज़्बा तय करता है कि हर एक जैसा काम भी किसी के लिए बदक़िस्मती है और किसी के लिए इबादत।

The author says that beyond health and good company, a third necessary thing is 'purposeful work'. He quotes a letter from Dr Zakir Hussain here: 'work is never purposeless; work is not a name for passing the time, work is not a name for wasting an empty heart, work is love, work is worship.' To illustrate this he tells of two labourers breaking stones on a mountain - one, when asked, said bitterly and angrily 'can't you see, I'm breaking the stones of my own misfortune'; the other, hearing the same question, answered joyfully 'I am building a temple of worship.' The author says it is this very attitude, this very spirit, that decides whether the same work becomes misfortune for one person and worship for another.

मुसन्निफ़ आगे कहते हैं कि दूसरों के साथ मेल-जोल, मेहरबानी, इंसाफ़, हमदर्दी, ख़ुश-मिज़ाजी और ज़राफ़त (नज़ाकत) भी अच्छी ज़िंदगी के लिए बहुत ज़रूरी है। हमें दूसरों की ख़ूबियों की तलाश और उनकी नेक नामी में यक़ीन रखना चाहिए, न कि हर वक़्त उनकी बुराई ढूँढते रहना चाहिए। जो शख़्स दूसरों को हक़ीर (तुच्छ) समझता है और अपनी ख़ुदपसंदी में डूबा रहता है, वह ख़ुद अपनी ज़िंदगी में भी सुकून नहीं पाता।

The author goes on to say that harmony, kindness, justice, empathy, good humour and refinement toward others are also essential for a good life. We should search for others' good qualities and trust in their good name, rather than constantly hunting for their faults. A person who considers others contemptible and remains absorbed in self-regard finds no peace even in his own life.

मज़मून के आख़िर में मुसन्निफ़ ख़ूबसूरत शख़्सियत की मिसाल एक चराग़ से देते हैं, जो जलकर अपने आस-पास रौशनी फैलाता है - मगर ख़ुद इंसान को भी अपनी शख़्सियत को इस तरह 'जलाना' आना चाहिए। हुस्न (सुंदरता) - चाहे इल्म में हो, हुनर में हो, या फ़न (कला) में - क़ुदरत का एक अनमोल तोहफ़ा है, जिसे इंसान अपनी ज़िंदगी में तलाश करके उसे मालामाल बना सकता है।

At the essay's end the author compares a beautiful personality to a lamp that, in burning, spreads light around it - but a person must also learn to 'light' their own personality in this way. Beauty - whether in knowledge, in skill, or in art - is a precious gift of nature that a person can seek out in life and thereby enrich it.
