About the author

A ghazal by Wali Muhammad 'Wali' (1667-1707), considered the founder of the Urdu ghazal. Wali brought a new colour and rhythm to Persian-style poetry in Rekhta (early Urdu), and his poetry inspired Delhi's poets to write in Urdu too.

Summary

Meaning: poverty/misfortune (muflisi) strips away every spring, every glow - even a person's good name is lost to it. Describing the beloved's tresses, the intoxication of her eyes and the longing to meet her, the poet shows that every beautiful thing eventually fades before poverty and time. In the closing couplet the poet signs his pen-name 'Wali' while returning to the beauty of that fairy-faced beloved.
