About the author
A ghazal by Mir Taqi Mir (1722-1810), called 'Khuda-e-Sukhan' (the god of verse). The greatest quality of Mir's poetry is that he expressed the sufferings of his own life with great simplicity and effect.
Summary
Meaning: tears never fail to come to the eyes, but when tears of blood (deep anguish) should come, they do not. My senses never leave me, yet the moment she appears, they do leave (a paradox). Patience was a companion in separation, but it too has not come for a long while now. A wish left the heart without cause - even weeping does not come without cause. There is so much in the heart, my friend, but words do not reach the lips. Mir sits at a distance from her, composed - this restraint does not come without love.
