غزل - مجروح سلطان پوری Ghazal - Majrooh Sultanpuri

भावार्थ: हम कूचे-बाज़ार के माल (सामान) की तरह हैं, जिस पर हर नज़र ख़रीदार की तरह उठती है - यानी दुनिया हर किसी की क़ीमत आँकती रहती है। वह (माशूक़) तो कहीं और है, मगर दिल के आस-पास ही महसूस होता है - इश्क़ की राह यूँ ही सीधी-सी कहीं है। बिना तलवार के भी यह रंगीन राह चलनी पड़ती है। नाज़ुक जुनून अब जाकर कुछ घुला-मिला है, और वह माशूक़ की ज़ुल्फ़ों की तरह नम हो गया है। हर क़दम का निशान दीवार की तरह ऊँचा नज़र आता है, दिल के ज़ख़्म गाल के लबों जैसे हो गए हैं। आख़िर में मजरूह कहते हैं - माशूक़ वफ़ादारों की फ़ेहरिस्त लिख रहा है, और हम भी वहाँ एक गुनहगार की तरह खड़े हैं।

Meaning: we are like goods in a market lane, upon which every glance rises like a buyer's - the world constantly appraises everyone's worth. The beloved is elsewhere, yet feels close to the heart - the path of longing lies simply somewhere near. Even without a sword, this colourful path must be walked. The delicate madness has now somewhat dissolved, growing moist like the beloved's tresses. Every footprint now looms as tall as a wall; the heart's wounds have become like the lips of a cheek. In the end Majrooh says the beloved is writing down the names of the faithful, and the poet too stands there like a sinner.
