भावार्थ: आधी रात की ख़ामोशी में धीरे-धीरे गाती हुई, वादी-पहाड़ की ठंडी हवा खाती हुई, तूफ़ानों में गूँजती आवाज़ के साथ हज़ारों सुर एक ही धुन में गाती हुई - जैसे कोई महबूबा शरमाकर अपनी ही अदा से शरमाती हो, या एक नागिन मस्ती में लहराती हो - रेल स्टेशन से लहराती हुई चल पड़ी है। सीटी बजाती, डगमगाती, झूमती हुई, तेज़ झोंकों में अपनी गड़गड़ाहट का साज़ बजाती - जैसे लहरों का तराना हो, जैसे परियों का गीत। रात की तारीकी में झिलमिलाती-काँपती, मंज़िल-दर-मंज़िल तेज़ होती जाती, खेतों में मीठे नाले-सी बहती, पहाड़ी पर झरनों की झलक दिखाती - यह रेल गुज़रे मंज़र पर अँधेरे का पर्दा डालकर, दिल के सफ़्हे से माज़ी (अतीत) के नक़्श मिटाती हुई आगे बढ़ती जाती है।
