दोहे (रहीम) Dohe (Couplets of Rahim)

रहीम कहते हैं कि प्रेम का रिश्ता धागे जैसा नाज़ुक होता है, इसे झटके से नहीं तोड़ना चाहिए। एक बार टूट जाए तो फिर नहीं जुड़ता, और जुड़ भी जाए तो उसमें गाँठ (दूरी और शक) पड़ जाती है।

Rahim says the bond of love is delicate like a thread; it should not be snapped in haste. Once broken it cannot be rejoined, and even if rejoined a knot (distance/mistrust) remains in it.

रहीम कहते हैं कि जो धन मुसीबत के समय काम आए वही सच्चा है। बिना मुसीबत आए यह पता नहीं चलता कि कौन सच्चा दोस्त है और कौन झूठा, मुश्किल समय ही असली साथी को पहचनवाता है।

Rahim says wealth that is of use in times of trouble is the true wealth. Without adversity one cannot tell true friends from false, hardship alone reveals the genuine companion.

रहीम कहते हैं कि एक ही काम पर पूरा ध्यान लगाओ तो सारे काम बन जाते हैं, पर एक साथ कई काम पकड़ने से कुछ भी पूरा नहीं होता। जैसे जड़ में पानी देने से फूल और फल अपने आप मिल जाते हैं।

Rahim says if you pursue one goal with full focus, all is accomplished; but grasping at many things at once achieves nothing. Just as watering the root brings flowers and fruit of itself.

रहीम कहते हैं कि अपने मन का दुख अपने ही मन में रखना चाहिए, दूसरों को नहीं बताना चाहिए। क्योंकि लोग दुख सुनकर साथ देने के बजाय अक्सर हँसी उड़ाते हैं।

Rahim says keep the sorrow of your heart within your heart; do not broadcast it. For people, on hearing your pain, often mock it rather than offer comfort.

रहीम कहते हैं कि बड़ों को देखकर छोटों को कम नहीं समझना चाहिए, हर चीज़ का अपना काम होता है। जहाँ सुई का काम है वहाँ तलवार किसी काम की नहीं। हर चीज़ की अपनी जगह और अपना महत्त्व है।

Rahim says do not despise small things by comparing them with great ones, each has its own use. Where a needle is needed, a sword is useless. Everything has its own place and worth.

रहीम कहते हैं कि 'पानी' को बनाए रखना चाहिए, क्योंकि पानी के बिना सब बेकार है। यहाँ 'पानी' के तीन मतलब हैं, मोती की चमक, इंसान की इज़्ज़त, और आटे में मिलने वाला पानी। इज़्ज़त (पानी) चली गई तो मोती, इंसान और आटा, सब बेकार हो जाते हैं।

Rahim says one must preserve 'paani', for without it all is worthless. 'Paani' carries three meanings here, the lustre of a pearl, a person's honour/self-respect, and literal water for flour/life. Once 'paani' is lost, the pearl, the man and the flour all become useless.
