नए इलाके में / खुशबू रचते हैं हाथ Naye Ilake Mein / Khushboo Rachte Hain Haath (Two poems by Arun Kamal)

कवि एक नए बसते इलाके में अपना घर ढूँढते हुए अक्सर रास्ता भूल जाते हैं। यहाँ रोज़ नए-नए मकान बन रहे हैं, इसलिए पुरानी पहचान की चीज़ें (जैसे पीपल का पेड़, गिरा हुआ मकान, खाली ज़मीन) मिट जाती हैं और कवि की याददाश्त उन्हें धोखा दे देती है।

The poet, searching for his house in a newly settled area, often loses his way. New houses are being built here every day, so the old landmarks (a peepal tree, a fallen house, an empty plot) disappear, and the poet's memory deceives him.

कवि कहते हैं कि यहाँ बदलाव इतना तेज़ है कि एक ही दिन में सब कुछ पुराना पड़ जाता है। जिस पहचान के सहारे कल घर ढूँढा था, वह आज बदल चुकी होती है। अब पुरानी यादों के भरोसे रहना मुमकिन नहीं।

The poet says change here is so fast that the world grows old in a single day. The landmark by which he found the house yesterday has already changed today. One can no longer rely on old memories.

अंत में कवि कहते हैं कि अब घर ढूँढने का एक ही तरीका बचा है, यादों को छोड़कर हर दरवाज़ा खटखटाओ और पूछो कि क्या यही वह घर है। यह आज के तेज़ी से बदलते जीवन में इंसान के अकेलेपन और दुविधा को दिखाता है।

Finally the poet says the only way left to find the house is to give up memory, knock on every door and ask whether this is the house. This reflects the loneliness and uncertainty of the human being in modern, rapidly changing life.

कवि बताते हैं कि जिन अगरबत्तियों से घरों में खुशबू और पूजा होती है, वे ऐसी जगह बनती हैं जो गंदी गलियों, कई नालों के पार और कूड़े के ढेरों के पीछे बसी है। जहाँ सबसे ज़्यादा गंदगी है, वहीं दुनिया की सबसे अच्छी खुशबू बनती है, यही अजीब विडंबना है।

The poet tells us that the incense sticks which bring fragrance and worship to homes are made in a place that lies amid dirty lanes, beyond several drains and behind heaps of garbage. Where there is the most filth, there the world's finest fragrance is created, this is the irony.

कवि अगरबत्ती बनाने वाले कई तरह के हाथों की तस्वीर खींचते हैं, उभरी नसों वाले (बूढ़े और मेहनती), घिसे नाखूनों वाले (लंबे काम से थके-टूटे), पीपल के पत्ते जैसे कोमल नए हाथ (बच्चे), और जूही की डाल जैसे खुशबूदार हाथ (जवान औरतें)। हर उम्र और हर हालत के लोग इस मेहनत में लगे हैं।

The poet paints many kinds of incense-making hands, hands with bulging veins (the old, the toil-worn), hands with worn nails (battered by long labour), soft new hands like peepal leaves (children), and fragrant hands like a jasmine sprig (young women). People of every age and condition are engaged in this labour.

कवि कहते हैं कि दुनिया की सारी गंदगी के बीच ये हाथ दुनिया की सारी खुशबू बनाते रहते हैं। मेहनती गरीब लोग दूसरों के घरों को महकाते हैं पर खुद बुरी हालत में जीते हैं। कविता मेहनत के सम्मान और समाज की नाइंसाफ़ी की ओर हमारा ध्यान खींचती है।

The poet says that amid all the filth of the world these hands keep creating all the fragrance of the world. The poor labourers perfume others' homes yet live in wretchedness. The poem draws our attention to the dignity of labour and to social inequality and exploitation.
