गीत-अगीत Geet-Ageet (The Sung and the Unsung)

कविता एक सवाल से शुरू होती है, गीत अच्छा है या अगीत? जो भाव गाकर बाहर आ जाए वह गीत, और जो भाव मन में ही रह जाए वह अगीत। कवि प्रकृति के तीन दृश्यों से यह सवाल हमारे सामने रखते हैं।

The poem opens with a question, which is finer, the sung or the unsung? A feeling expressed in song is 'geet'; a feeling that stays within is 'ageet'. The poet sets out this question through three scenes from nature.

नदी बिछड़ने (विरह) का गीत गाती हुई तेज़ी से बहती चली जाती है, यह गाया हुआ गीत है। किनारे पर खड़ा गुलाब सोचता है कि काश भगवान ने मुझे भी आवाज़ दी होती तो मैं भी अपने मन का दुख दुनिया को सुनाता। उसका अनकहा भाव ही अगीत है, पर वह भी कम सुंदर नहीं।

The river flows swiftly singing a song of separation, this is the sung song. The rose standing on the bank thinks: if only God had given me a voice, I too would tell the world my heart's sorrow. Its unspoken feeling is the unsung, yet no less beautiful.

पेड़ की डाल पर बैठा तोता (शुक) प्रेम का गीत गा रहा है, यह गीत है। उसी पेड़ की छाँव में तोती (शुकी) पंख फैलाए अंडे सेती है। उसके मन की आवाज़ बाहर आना चाहती है पर बच्चों के प्यार में दबकर चुप रह जाती है, यही अगीत है, जो ममता से भरा और उतना ही मीठा है।

The male parrot perched on a branch sings a song of love, this is the sung. In the shade of the same tree the female parrot broods her eggs with wings spread. The notes in her heart long to come out but stay silent, sunk in love for her young, this is the unsung, full of tenderness and just as sweet.

शाम के समय प्रेमी अपनी प्रेमिका को बुलाने के लिए प्यार भरा गीत गाता है, यह गीत है। प्रेमिका नीम के पेड़ की आड़ में छिपकर उस गीत को सुनती है और सोचती है, काश मैं इस गीत की एक कड़ी (पंक्ति) होती! उसका यह अनकहा भाव अगीत है, जो किसी मीठे गीत से कम नहीं।

At dusk the lover sings a song of love to call his beloved, this is the sung. The beloved, hidden behind a neem tree, listens and thinks, if only I were a line of this song! Her unspoken feeling is the unsung, no less sweet than any melody.

तीनों दृश्यों के बाद कवि का जवाब यही है कि गीत और अगीत दोनों ही अपने-अपने तरीके से सुंदर और ज़रूरी हैं। कहा गया भाव (गीत) सुनाई देता है, पर अनकहा भाव (अगीत) मन की गहराई में और भी मीठा होता है। दोनों में कोई छोटा-बड़ा नहीं।

After all three scenes, the poet's answer is that the sung and the unsung are each beautiful and important in their own way. The expressed feeling (geet) is heard, but the unspoken feeling (ageet) is even sweeter in the depths of the heart. Neither is greater than the other.
