एवरेस्ट: मेरी शिखर यात्रा Everest: Meri Shikhar Yatra (Everest: My Summit Journey)

बचेंद्री दिल्ली से काठमांडू होते हुए अपने दल के साथ एवरेस्ट की ओर बढ़ती हैं। नामचे बाज़ार से उन्हें पहली बार एवरेस्ट (सागरमाथा) दिखता है। रास्ते में बर्फ़ गिरती है और बर्फ़ में गहरी दरारें (क्रेवास) मिलती हैं।

Bachendri travels with the team from Delhi via Kathmandu towards Everest. From Namche Bazaar she sees Everest (Sagarmatha) for the first time. On the way they meet snowfall and ice crevasses.

रास्ते में एक हिमस्खलन में एक शेरपा कुली की मौत हो जाती है और कुछ लोग घायल हो जाते हैं। कर्नल खुल्लर समझाते हैं कि ऐसे बड़े अभियानों में मौत को शांत मन से मान लेना पड़ता है। इससे दल सतर्क और मज़बूत बनता है।

On the way an avalanche kills a Sherpa porter and injures some others. Colonel Khullar explains that in such great expeditions death must be accepted calmly. This makes the team alert and strong.

रात के समय कैंप पर एक बहुत डरावना हिमस्खलन आता है और कई साथी बर्फ़ में दब जाते हैं। बचेंद्री भी दब जाती हैं, पर लोपसांग अपनी कुल्हाड़ी/चाकू से बर्फ़ काटकर उन्हें निकाल लेता है। कई लोग घायल हो जाते हैं।

At night a terrible avalanche strikes the camp and buries several companions. Bachendri too is buried, but Lopsang digs her out with his ice-axe/knife. Many members are injured.

घायलों के लौट जाने पर भी बचेंद्री आगे बढ़ने की ठान लेती हैं। साउथ कोल का आखिरी शिविर बहुत कठोर और ठंडा है। वहाँ से अंग दोरजी के साथ वे चोटी की ओर आखिरी मुश्किल चढ़ाई शुरू करती हैं।

Even after the injured return, Bachendri decides to go on. The last camp at the South Col is extremely harsh and cold. From there, with Ang Dorjee, she begins the final difficult climb to the summit.

23 मई 1984 को दोपहर 1:07 बजे बचेंद्री एवरेस्ट की चोटी पर पहुँच जाती हैं। वे घुटनों के बल झुककर बर्फ़ पर माथा टेकती हैं, थैले से दुर्गा माँ का चित्र और हनुमान चालीसा निकालकर लाल कपड़े में बाँधकर बर्फ़ में दबा देती हैं और प्रार्थना करती हैं। वे एवरेस्ट चढ़ने वाली पहली भारतीय महिला बन जाती हैं।

On 23 May 1984 at 1:07 PM Bachendri reaches the summit of Everest. She kneels and bows her forehead to the snow, takes out a picture of Goddess Durga and the Hanuman Chalisa, wraps them in red cloth, buries them in the snow and prays. She becomes the first Indian woman to climb Everest.
