दुःख का अधिकार Dukh ka Adhikar (The Right to Grieve)

लेखक बाज़ार में खरबूज़े बेचती एक बुढ़िया को देखता है। वह सिर झुकाए, कपड़े में मुँह छिपाए रो रही है। आसपास के लोग उससे नफरत कर रहे हैं और ताने मार रहे हैं।

In the market the author sees an old woman selling muskmelons. Her head is bowed, her face hidden in her cloth, and she is weeping. People around her show disgust and pass cruel remarks.

लोग कहते हैं कि बेटे की मौत के एक ही दिन बाद यह बेशर्म दुकान लगाकर बैठ गई, इसका दुःख झूठा है। कोई उसकी मजबूरी समझने को तैयार नहीं।

Onlookers sneer that she has shamelessly set up shop just a day after her son's death, so her grief must be false. No one tries to understand her helplessness.

पता चलता है कि उसका इकलौता जवान बेटा भगवाना परसों साँप के काटने से मर गया। घर में बीमार बहू और भूखे पोते-पोतियाँ हैं। दवा-इलाज और कफ़न-दफ़न में जो कुछ था सब खर्च हो गया।

The truth emerges: her only grown son Bhagwana died of a snakebite two days ago. At home are a sick daughter-in-law and hungry grandchildren. Whatever she had was spent on his treatment and funeral.

भूखे बच्चों के लिए पैसे जुटाने के लिए बुढ़िया को रोते-रोते भी बाज़ार में बैठना पड़ा। दुःख मनाने की फुरसत उसके पास नहीं है, यही गरीबी की त्रासदी है।

To earn money for the starving children, the old woman has to sit in the market even while weeping. She has no leisure to mourn, that is the tragedy of poverty.

लेखक उस संभ्रांत (धनी) महिला को याद करता है जो बेटे की मृत्यु पर ढाई महीने शोक मना सकी। वह सोचता है, दुःख मनाने का हक़ भी पोशाक और पैसे से तय होता है। गरीब के पास यह हक़ ही नहीं।

The author recalls a wealthy lady who could mourn her son for two and a half months. He concludes that even the right to grieve is decided by clothes and money, the poor are denied it.
