तुम कब जाओगे, अतिथि Tum Kab Jaoge, Atithi (When Will You Leave, Guest?)

मेहमान बिना पहले बताए लेखक के घर आ जाता है। पहले दिन घर का मालिक बड़े प्यार से उसका स्वागत करता है, अच्छा खाना खिलाता है, घुमाता है और खूब हँसी-मज़ाक होता है।

The guest arrives at the author's house without prior notice. On the first day the host welcomes him very warmly, good food, outings, laughter and chatter.

एक-दो दिन तो ठीक रहता है, पर मेहमान जाने का नाम ही नहीं लेता। लेखक रोज़ सोचता है कि आज तो यह चला जाएगा, पर वह नहीं जाता। घर का खर्च बिगड़ने लगता है।

A day or two pass well, but the guest shows no sign of leaving. Each day the author hopes 'today he will go,' but he does not. The household budget starts going off balance.

घर के मालिक का गरमजोशी वाला स्वागत धीरे-धीरे ठंडा पड़ने लगता है। खाना सादा हो जाता है, मुस्कान कम हो जाती है, बातचीत में रूखापन आ जाता है। पत्नी की मुस्कान भी गायब हो जाती है।

The host's warm welcome gradually cools. The food becomes plain, the smiles fewer, the conversation stiff. Even the wife's smile vanishes.

लेखक के मन में बार-बार एक ही सवाल गूँजता है, 'तुम कब जाओगे, अतिथि?' वह सामने कह तो नहीं पाता, पर मन-ही-मन चाहता है कि मेहमान अब चला जाए।

One question keeps echoing in the author's mind, 'When will you leave, guest?' He cannot say it openly, but inwardly he longs for the guest to depart.

लेखक मज़ाक-व्यंग्य में कहता है कि अब मेहमान 'भगवान' जैसा नहीं, 'राक्षस' जैसा लगने लगा है। सीख यह है कि मेहमान को भी घरवालों की सहूलियत का ध्यान रखना चाहिए और समय रहते चले जाना चाहिए।

The author satirically says the guest now seems to have turned from a 'god' into a 'demon.' The message: a guest too must respect the host's convenience and take leave at the right time.
