सिकतासेतुः Sikatasetur (The Sand Bridge)

इस नाटक के अंश में तपस्या से विद्या पाने का प्रयत्न करने वाले तपोदत्त नामक कुमार का चित्रण है। उसके मार्गदर्शन के लिए मनुष्य का वेश धारण किए हुए देवराज इन्द्र वहां आए।

This dramatic excerpt presents Tapodatta, a young man who strives to gain knowledge through penance. Indra, the king of gods, came there disguised as a common man to guide him.

तपोदत्त कहता है: मैं तपोदत्त हूं। बचपन में पिताजी के बार-बार कहने पर भी मैंने विद्या नहीं पढ़ी। इसी कारण परिवार, मित्र और ज्ञाति सभी ने मुझे धिक्कारा।

Tapodatta says: I am Tapodatta. Even when urged again and again by my father in childhood, I did not study. Because of this, my family, friends, and relatives all condemned me.

अरे विधाता! मैंने यह क्या किया? उस समय कैसी मूर्खता थी मेरी! यह भी नहीं सोचा कि वस्त्र-आभूषणों से सजा होने पर भी मणिहीन सर्प की भांति विद्याहीन मनुष्य घर और सभा में शोभा नहीं पाता।

Oh fate, what have I done? How foolish I was then! I did not even think that a man without learning does not shine in society or at home, just like a serpent without a gem, however richly adorned with garments and ornaments.

(एक पुरुष को बालू से पुल बनाने का प्रयत्न करते देखकर हंसते हुए) अरे! संसार में मूर्खों की कमी नहीं है! यह मूढ़ तेज बहाव वाली नदी में बालू से पुल बनाने का प्रयत्न कर रहा है!

(Seeing a man trying to build a bridge with sand, laughing) Indeed, there is no shortage of fools in the world! This fool is trying to build a bridge with sand in a fast-flowing river!

तब देवराज इन्द्र ने उत्तर दिया: यदि तुम अध्ययन, श्रवण और पठन के बिना विद्या प्राप्त कर सकते हो, तो मैं भी बालू से पुल बना सकता हूं।

Then Indra replied: if you can gain knowledge without study, listening, and reading, then I too can build a bridge with sand.

देवराज का अभिप्राय जानकर, विद्या पाने की इच्छा से, तपोदत्त गुरुकुल चला गया।

Understanding the intention of Indra, Tapodatta, desirous of gaining knowledge, went to a gurukul.
