प्रत्युपकारः Pratyupkarah (Repaying a Favour)

एक शिकारी था जो हर रोज जंगल में जाल बिछाकर पक्षियों को पकड़ता था और उन्हें बेचकर अपना गुजारा करता था। एक बार उसने जाल बिछाकर बहुत से कबूतर पकड़ लिए।

There was a hunter who used to trap birds in his net every day and earn his livelihood by selling them. Once he spread his net in the forest and caught many doves.

उस जाल से एक कबूतरी बच गई थी। उसने दूर से देखा कि उसका पति जाल में फँसा हुआ है। वह बहुत दुखी हुई, लेकिन उसने धैर्य नहीं छोड़ा।

One female dove had escaped the net. From a distance she saw that her husband was caught in the net. She was deeply saddened but did not lose her composure.

बाद में वह शिकारी रास्ता भटककर कड़ाके की ठण्ड में एक झोपड़ी में बैठ गया। वह भूखा और प्यासा था। उस कबूतरी ने उस शिकारी को अपना अतिथि मानकर उसकी सेवा करने का प्रयास किया।

Later, the hunter lost his way and sat down in a hut in severe cold. He was hungry and thirsty. The female dove considered the hunter her guest and tried her best to serve him.

जाल में बँधे कबूतर ने भी शिकारी का कष्ट देखकर सोचा: 'यह अतिथि मेरे घर आया है। अतिथि की सेवा करना धर्म है। मैं इसके लिए कुछ करूँगा।' उसने आग में कूदकर अपने आप को शिकारी के लिए समर्पित कर दिया।

The male dove caught in the net also saw the hunter's suffering and thought: 'This guest has come to my home. Serving a guest is righteous duty. I shall do something for him.' He entered the fire and offered himself to the hunter.

यह देखकर शिकारी का मन बदल गया। वह जोर-जोर से रोने लगा और बहुत पछताया। 'अरे! ये पक्षी भी इतना बड़ा धार्मिक कार्य करते हैं, लेकिन मैं इन्हें हिंसा देता हूँ!' यह सोचकर उसने सारे कैद पक्षियों को मुक्त कर दिया।

Seeing this, the hunter's heart was transformed. He wept loudly and felt deep remorse. 'How remarkable! These birds perform such great righteous acts, yet I harm them!' Thinking thus, he freed all the captive birds.

शिकारी ने उसी समय शपथ लेकर हमेशा के लिए पक्षियों की हिंसा छोड़ दी। कबूतर और कबूतरी की निःस्वार्थ सेवा और धर्म-पालन ने शिकारी का जीवन बदल दिया। यही पाठ का सन्देश है: उपकार हमेशा प्रत्युपकार से फलता है।

The hunter took a vow at that very moment and gave up harming birds forever. The selfless service and righteous conduct of the dove pair transformed the hunter's life. This is the lesson's message: kindness always bears fruit through the repayment of kindness.
