गोदोहनम् Godohanam - The Milking

यह नाटक 'चतुर्व्यूहम्' नामक पुस्तक से संक्षिप्त करके लिया गया है। इसमें उस व्यक्ति की कहानी है जो धनवान और सुखी बनना चाहता है और इसीलिए एक माह तक गाय का दूध नहीं दुहता।

This dramatic excerpt is taken and abridged from the book Chaturvyuham. It tells the story of a man who, wishing to become wealthy and happy, stops milking his cow for an entire month.

मल्लिका मोदक बना रही है और धीरे-धीरे शिव की स्तुति कर रही है। तब मोदक की सुगंध पाकर प्रसन्न चन्दन वहाँ आता है और कहता है: अहा! यह सुगंध तो बड़ी मनोहर है।

Mallika is making modakas and softly singing praises of Shiva. Then Chandana enters, delighted by the fragrance of the modakas, and says: Ah! This fragrance is truly enchanting.

मल्लिका क्रोध से कहती है: रुको, रुको, इन मोदकों को मत छुओ। हे नाथ, मैं जानती हूँ, परंतु ये मोदक पूजा के लिए बनाए गए हैं।

Mallika says angrily: Stop, stop, do not touch these modakas. I know well, dear husband, but these modakas are prepared for worship.

मल्लिका कहती है: यहाँ पूजा नहीं होगी। मैं कल सुबह अपनी सखियों के साथ काशीविश्वनाथ मंदिर जाऊँगी। वहाँ हम गंगास्नान और तीर्थयात्रा करेंगे। चन्दन उदासी दिखाता है।

Mallika says: The worship will not happen here. Tomorrow morning I will go with my friends to the Kashi Vishvanath temple, where we will take a holy dip in the Ganga and go on a pilgrimage. Chandana pretends to be sad.

उसने सोचा कि महीने के अंत में गाय में इकट्ठा हुआ सारा दूध एक बार में बेचकर धन कमाएगा। परंतु जब महीने के अंत में वह दूध दुहने गया तो उसे एक बूंद भी नहीं मिली।

He thought that by month's end he would sell all the accumulated milk at once and earn great wealth. But when he attempted to milk the cow at the end of the month, he did not get even a single drop of milk.

दूध मिलने की जगह गाय की ठोकरों से उसके हाथ लहूलुहान हो गए। उसे समझ आया कि रोज का काम यदि एक महीने इकट्ठा करके किया जाए तो लाभ के बदले हानि ही होती है।

Instead of getting milk, his hands became bloodied from the cow's kicks. He then understood that if a daily task is accumulated for a month and done all at once, the result is loss rather than gain.
