स्वर्णकाकः Svarna Kakah (The Golden Crow)

किसी गाँव में एक गरीब बूढ़ी स्त्री रहती थी। उसकी एक विनम्र और सुन्दर बेटी थी। एक दिन माँ ने थाली में चावल रखकर बेटी को आदेश दिया कि धूप में चावलों को पक्षियों से बचाओ।

Long ago in a certain village there lived a poor old woman. She had a humble and charming daughter. One day the mother placed rice in a dish and instructed her daughter: 'Guard the rice from birds in the sunshine.'

कुछ समय बाद एक अद्भुत कौवा उड़कर उसके पास आया। ऐसा सोने के पंखों वाला और चाँदी की चोंच वाला कौवा उसने पहले कभी नहीं देखा था। उसे चावल खाते देख बालिका रोने लगी।

After some time a strange crow flew to her side. She had never before seen such a golden-feathered, silver-beaked crow. Seeing it eating the rice, the girl began to weep.

रोकते हुए उसने प्रार्थना की, 'चावल मत खाओ। मेरी माँ बहुत गरीब है।' सोने के पंखों वाले काक ने कहा, 'रोओ मत। सूर्योदय से पहले गाँव के बाहर पीपल के वृक्ष के पास आना, मैं तुम्हें चावल का मूल्य दूँगा।' प्रसन्न बालिका रात को सो भी न सकी।

Trying to stop it, she pleaded, 'Do not eat the rice. My mother is very poor.' The golden-feathered crow spoke: 'Do not grieve. You must come before sunrise to the peepal tree outside the village. I will give you the price of the rice.' The delighted girl could not even sleep that night.

सूर्योदय से पहले ही वह वहाँ पहुँच गई। पेड़ के ऊपर देखकर वह आश्चर्यचकित हो गई कि वहाँ सोने का महल है। जब कौवा सोकर जागा तो उसने सोने की खिड़की से कहा, 'अरे बालिके! तुम आ गई, रुको, मैं तुम्हारे लिए सीढ़ी उतारता हूँ। बताओ, सोने की, चाँदी की या ताँबे की?'

She arrived there even before sunrise. Looking up at the tree she was astonished to find that there was a golden palace there. When the crow woke from sleep it spoke from the golden window: 'Oh girl, you have come! Wait, I shall lower a staircase for you. Tell me, shall it be golden, silver or copper?'

लड़की ने कहा, 'मैं गरीब माँ की बेटी हूँ, ताँबे की सीढ़ी से ही आऊँगी।' काक ने कहा, 'सोने की सीढ़ी ही उतरे।' और सोने की सीढ़ी उतार दी। वह उससे महल में चढ़कर वहाँ सोने की थालियों में भोजन करती है। काक ने उससे मधुर वाणी में कहा, 'बालिके! अब घर जाओ। पर पहले बताओ, कैसा सन्दूक चाहिए? बड़ा, मध्यम या छोटा?'

The girl said, 'I am the daughter of a poor mother. I will come by the copper staircase only.' The crow said, 'Let the golden staircase itself descend,' and lowered the golden staircase. She climbed it into the palace and ate food from golden plates. The crow spoke to her in gentle words: 'Girl, now go home. But first tell me, what kind of box do you want? Large, medium or small?'

बालिका ने कहा, 'मुझे छोटा ही पसन्द है।' काक ने उसे सबसे छोटा सन्दूक दिया। वह घर आकर उसे खोला। उसमें अनेक रत्न और सोने के टुकड़े मिले। माँ और बेटी दोनों बहुत प्रसन्न हो गई। उनकी गरीबी समाप्त हो गई।

The girl said, 'I prefer only the small one.' The crow gave her the smallest box. She came home and opened it. In it were found many kinds of gems and pieces of gold. Both the mother and daughter became extremely happy. Their poverty came to an end.

यह समाचार सुनकर लोभ से भरी दूसरी बूढ़ी स्त्री ने अपनी बेटी को भी वहाँ भेजा। उस बालिका ने सोने की सीढ़ी ही माँगी। काक ने सोने की सीढ़ी उतारी। उसने सबसे बड़ा सन्दूक माँगा। काक ने बड़ा सन्दूक दिया। घर पर उसे खोलने पर उसमें से इतना भारी बोझ निकला कि वह दुखी हो गई। लोभ का परिणाम सदा ऐसा ही होता है।

Hearing this news, another old woman filled with greed sent her own daughter there too. That girl asked for the golden staircase only. The crow lowered the golden staircase. She asked for the largest box. The crow gave the large box. When she opened it at home, such a great burden came out of it that she became miserable. This is always the bad consequence of greed.
