कल्लू कुम्हार की उनाकोटी Kallu Kumhar Ki Unakoti

दिसंबर 1999 में लेखक 'ऑन द रोड' टी.वी. श्रृंखला की शूटिंग के लिए त्रिपुरा पहुँचे। राजधानी अगरतला में उज्जयंत महल देखा, जहाँ अब राज्य विधानसभा बैठती है। त्रिपुरा तीन ओर से बांग्लादेश से घिरा है; असम और मिज़ोरम पड़ोसी राज्य हैं। यहाँ उन्नीस अनुसूचित जनजातियाँ रहती हैं और दुनिया के चारों बड़े धर्मों को मानने वाले लोग मिलते हैं, यह कई धर्मों और कई संस्कृतियों वाले समाज का उदाहरण है।

In December 1999 the author reached Tripura to shoot the TV series 'On the Road'. In the capital Agartala he saw the Ujjayanta Palace, where the state legislative assembly now sits. Tripura is surrounded on three sides by Bangladesh, with Assam and Mizoram as neighbours. It is home to nineteen Scheduled Tribes and followers of all four major world religions, an example of a multi-religious, multicultural society.

यात्रा में लेखक तीलियामुरा, मनु और कैलासशहर जैसे जगहों से गुज़रे। तीलियामुरा में उनकी मुलाकात कोकबरोक बोली के लोकप्रिय लोक-गायक हेमंत कुमार जमातिया और रेडियो कलाकार व नगर पंचायत सदस्या मंजु ऋषिदास से हुई। मनु कस्बे में मनु नदी के किनारे अगरबत्ती के लिए बाँस की सींकें तैयार होती देखीं। लेखक ने बताया कि मशहूर संगीतकार एस.डी. बर्मन त्रिपुरा के राजपरिवार से थे।

On the way the author passed places like Teliamura, Manu and Kailashahar. At Teliamura he met Hemant Kumar Jamatia, a popular folk singer of the Kokborok tongue, and Manju Rishidas, a radio artist and town-council member. At Manu town, by the Manu river, he saw bamboo sticks being prepared for incense (agarbatti). He noted that the famous music director S. D. Burman belonged to Tripura's royal family.

उनाकोटी कैलासशहर के पास का एक बहुत बड़ा तीर्थ है, जो दस वर्ग किलोमीटर से भी ज़्यादा इलाके में फैला है। यहाँ पहाड़ों को अंदर से काटकर शिव की बहुत बड़ी चट्टानी मूर्तियाँ बनाई गई हैं। 'उनाकोटी' का मतलब है, 'एक कोटि (करोड़) से एक कम'। माना जाता है कि यहाँ शिव की करीब एक करोड़ से एक कम मूर्तियाँ हैं।

Unakoti, near Kailashahar, is a vast pilgrimage site spread over more than ten square kilometres, where colossal rock-cut images of Shiva have been carved into the hillsides. 'Unakoti' means 'one less than a crore (koti)', it is believed the site holds nearly one crore minus one images of Shiva.

एक स्थानीय कथा के अनुसार कल्लू नाम का कुम्हार शिव-पार्वती के साथ कैलाश जाना चाहता था। शिव ने शर्त रखी कि उसे एक ही रात में शिव की एक करोड़ मूर्तियाँ बनानी होंगी। कल्लू रातभर मेहनत करता रहा, पर सुबह होने तक उसकी मूर्तियाँ एक करोड़ से एक कम ही बनीं। इसी वजह से शिव उसे साथ नहीं ले गए, और इस जगह का नाम 'उनाकोटी' पड़ गया। (एक दूसरी कथा देवी पार्वती/गंगा-अवतरण से भी जोड़ी जाती है।)

According to a local legend, a potter named Kallu wished to go to Kailash with Shiva and Parvati. Shiva set the condition that he must carve one crore images of Shiva in a single night. Kallu toiled all night, but by morning his images numbered one less than a crore. For this reason Shiva did not take him along, and the place came to be called 'Unakoti'. उनाकोटी की मूर्तियाँ अनगढ़, आदिवासी ढंग की हैं, सजी-सँवरी शास्त्रीय कला से अलग, फिर भी बहुत असरदार। यहाँ बहुत बड़ा शिव-मुख (कल्लू-भैरव) और गंगा के उतरने का दृश्य चट्टानों पर उकेरा गया है। लेखक इस उपेक्षित पर अनोखी विरासत को सामने लाते हैं और भारत की विविधता तथा संस्कृति की समृद्धि पर गर्व जताते हैं, साथ ही ऐसी जगहों को बचाने की ज़रूरत की ओर ध्यान दिलाते हैं।

The Unakoti sculptures are raw, tribal in style, different from refined classical art, yet deeply striking. A gigantic face of Shiva (Kallu-Bhairav) and a depiction of the Ganga's descent are carved into the rocks. The author brings this neglected but unique heritage to light, expresses pride in India's diversity and cultural richness, and draws attention to the need to preserve such sites.
