स्मृति Smriti (Memory)

यह सन् 1908 की कड़ाके की सर्दी की बात है। लेखक झरबेरी के बेर तोड़कर खा रहे थे, तभी बड़े भाई साहब ने उन्हें बुलाया और तीन ज़रूरी चिट्ठियाँ देकर मक्खनपुर (मनपुर) के डाकखाने में डालने भेजा। लेखक अपने छोटे भाई के साथ चल पड़े। चिट्ठियाँ उन्होंने अपनी टोपी में रख लीं।

This is an incident from the biting winter of 1908. The boy was eating jharberi berries when his elder brother called him, gave him three important letters and sent him to post them at the Makkhanpur (Manpur) post office. He set out with his younger brother, tucking the letters into his cap.

रास्ते में एक सूखा कुआँ था, करीब चौबीस हाथ गहरा, जिसमें एक काला ज़हरीला साँप गिरा हुआ था। स्कूल आते-जाते बच्चे उस कुएँ में मिट्टी के ढेले फेंककर साँप की फुफकार सुनने का मज़ेदार खेल खेला करते थे। उस दिन भी लेखक ने यही करने के लिए टोपी उतारी।

On the way stood a dry well, about twenty-four cubits deep, into which a black venomous snake had fallen. Children going to and from school enjoyed throwing clods into it to hear the snake hiss. That day too the boy took off his cap to play this game.

जैसे ही लेखक ने टोपी उतारी, तीनों चिट्ठियाँ कुएँ में गिर पड़ीं। अब बच्चे के सामने बड़ी मुश्किल थी, चिट्ठियाँ न पहुँचने पर बड़े भाई की पिटाई पक्की थी, और झूठ बोलना उसे आता नहीं था। आख़िर में उसने तय किया कि चाहे साँप हो, वह कुएँ में उतरकर चिट्ठियाँ निकालेगा।

The moment he removed his cap, all three letters fell into the well. Now the boy faced a terrible dilemma, if the letters were not delivered, a beating from his elder brother was certain, and he did not know how to lie. Finally he resolved that, snake or no snake, he would climb down and recover the letters.

दोनों भाइयों ने पाँच धोतियों को कसकर बाँधकर रस्सी बनाई और एक सिरे पर डंडा बाँधा। छोटा भाई ऊपर रस्सी थामे खड़ा रहा और लेखक नीचे उतरा। तंग जगह में साँप फन उठाए तैयार बैठा था। डंडा घुमाने की जगह नहीं थी, इसलिए लेखक ने अक्ल से काम लिया, मिट्टी फेंककर साँप का ध्यान भटकाता और डंडे से चिट्ठियाँ अपनी ओर खींचता रहा।

The two brothers tied five dhotis tightly into a rope and fastened a stick to one end. The younger brother held the rope above while the boy climbed down. In the cramped space the snake sat ready with its hood raised. There was no room to swing the stick, so the boy used his wits, throwing dirt to distract the snake while dragging the letters towards himself with the stick.

साँप से कुछ ही इंच की दूरी पर रहकर लेखक ने तीनों चिट्ठियाँ उठाईं, धोती में बाँधीं और छोटे भाई की मदद से ऊपर खिंचकर बाहर आ गए। उन्होंने यह साहसी राज़ कई सालों तक किसी को नहीं बताया; सन् 1915 में मैट्रिक पास करने के बाद माँ को बताया, जो सुनकर भाव-विभोर होकर उन्हें गले लगा बैठीं।

Standing just inches from the snake, the boy lifted all three letters, tied them in the dhoti, and with his brother's help was pulled out. He kept this daring secret for years; only after passing matriculation in 1915 did he tell his mother, who, overwhelmed, embraced him.
