साँवले सपनों की याद Memory of Dusky Dreams

लेखक बताते हैं कि सालिम अली की मौत से एक पूरा ज़माना खत्म हो गया। वे उन्हें उसी जंगल के पंछी जैसा मानते हैं जो अपना आखिरी गीत गाकर कुदरत की गोद में खो जाता है। उनके चले जाने पर ऐसा लगा जैसे आसमान और कुदरत भी उदास हो गए हों।

The author says that with Salim Ali's death an entire era ended. He likens him to a forest-bird who, after singing its last song, merges into the lap of nature. At his death it seemed as if the sky and nature too had grown sad.

सालिम अली की पूरी ज़िंदगी पक्षियों को पढ़ने-समझने और कुदरत से प्यार में बीती। वे हाथ में दूरबीन लिए, आसमान की ओर एकटक देखते हुए पक्षियों को खोजते रहते थे। उनकी नज़र पक्षियों पर ऐसे टिकी रहती थी जैसे वे आसमान में ही किसी पंछी को ढूँढ़ रहे हों। यह प्यार उन्हें एक मामूली वैज्ञानिक से कहीं ऊपर उठा देता था।

Salim Ali's whole life was devoted to the study of birds and love of nature. Binoculars in hand, eyes fixed on the sky, he stayed absorbed in searching for birds. His gaze rested on birds as though he were forever seeking one in the heavens. This love raised him far above an ordinary scientist.

लेखक बताते हैं कि सालिम अली प्रकृति को लेकर बहुत भावुक थे। केरल की 'साइलेंट वैली' को बरबाद होने से बचाने के लिए वे उस समय के प्रधानमंत्री चौधरी चरण सिंह से मिले। जब उन्होंने रेगिस्तान की गरम हवाओं और उनके नुकसान के बारे में बताया, तो कुदरत से उनका ऐसा गहरा प्यार देखकर प्रधानमंत्री की आँखें भी भर आईं।

The author notes that Salim Ali was deeply sensitive to the environment. To save Kerala's 'Silent Valley' from destruction he met the then Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh. When he described the hot desert winds and their harmful effects, such deep love for nature moved the Prime Minister to tears.

सालिम अली अपनी पत्नी तहमीना से बहुत प्यार करते थे। उनकी मौत के बाद वे अंदर से टूट गए और अकेलेपन में डूब गए, फिर भी अपने काम में लगे रहे। लेखक इस घटना से उनके भावुक और नरम दिल को दिखाते हैं, वे बड़े वैज्ञानिक ही नहीं, गहरे दिल वाले इंसान भी थे।

Salim Ali loved his wife Tehmina deeply. After her death he was inwardly broken and sank into loneliness, yet stayed devoted to his work. Through this episode the author shows his sensitive, tender heart, he was not only a great scientist but also a deeply emotional human being.

The title 'Memory of Dusky Dreams' is the recollection of the unfulfilled dreams of nature-lovers like Salim Ali and Lawrence. Their dream was to save nature, birds and the environment. Yet these dreams still seem unfinished and 'dusky' (hazy/sad), for the environmental crisis keeps growing. The author's tribute inspires us toward conservation.
