मेघ आए Megh Aaye (The Clouds Have Come)

बादल गाँव में बने-ठने दामाद की तरह आ गए। उनके आने की हलचल में ठंडी हवा आगे-आगे नाचती-गाती-सी चल रही है। देखने की उतावली में गाँव के घरों की खिड़कियाँ और दरवाज़े अपने आप खुलने लगे।

The clouds arrive in the village like a son-in-law dressed up in finery. In the bustle of their coming, the cool breeze runs ahead as if dancing and singing; in eagerness the windows and doors of the village houses open by themselves.

पेड़ गर्दन ऊँची करके, झुक-झुककर मेहमान को देखना चाहते हैं। आँधी में उड़ती धूल ऐसी लगती है जैसे गाँव की औरतें अपना घाघरा सँभाले मेहमान देखने दौड़ रही हों। नदी ठहरकर, घूँघट उठाकर तिरछी नज़र से बादल को देखती है।

The trees crane their necks and bend to glimpse the guest. The dust flying in the storm looks as if village women, holding up their skirts, are running to see him. The river pauses, lifts its veil and watches the clouds with a sidelong glance.

बूढ़ा पीपल गाँव के बूढ़े आदमी की तरह झुककर आदर से मेहमान का स्वागत करता है। बेल (प्रेमिका) रूठकर दरवाज़े की आड़ में छिप जाती है और उलाहना देती है, 'इतने दिनों बाद याद आई?' तालाब मेहमान के पैर धोने के लिए चौड़े बर्तन में पानी भरकर लाने को तैयार है।

The old peepal tree, like a village elder, bends to welcome the guest with respect. The creeper (the beloved), sulking, hides behind the door and complains, 'You remembered me after so many days?' The pond is ready to bring water in a basin to wash the guest's feet.

बिजली चमकते ही रूठी बेल का शक दूर हो जाता है और दोनों मिल जाते हैं। मिलने की खुशी में आँखों से प्यार के आँसुओं की तरह बारिश की बूँदें झर-झर गिरने लगती हैं और धरती की प्यास बुझ जाती है, सूखे का इंतज़ार खत्म हो जाता है।

As lightning flashes, the sulking creeper's doubt vanishes and union takes place. In the joy of meeting, raindrops fall pattering like tears of love, and the earth is satisfied, the long wait of the drought ends.
