कैदी और कोकिला Kaidi aur Kokila (The Prisoner and the Cuckoo)

कवि आधी रात के सन्नाटे में कोयल की कूक सुनता है और चौंककर पूछता है, हे कोयल! तू इस अँधेरी, उदास रात में क्यों कूक रही है? क्या तुझे भी कोई गहरा दर्द सता रहा है जो तू चुप नहीं रह पाई?

In the silence of midnight the poet hears the cuckoo's call and, startled, asks, O cuckoo! why do you sing in this dark, gloomy night? Is some deep pain troubling you too, that you cannot stay silent?

कवि कोयल को बताता है कि वह कैसी डरावनी जगह में बंद है, चारों ओर ऊँची काली दीवारें, अँधेरा, सख़्त ज़िंदगी और बेइज़्ज़ती। जेल में उसके साथ चोर-डाकू जैसा बर्ताव होता है और कड़ी मेहनत-मज़दूरी करनी पड़ती है। यह माहौल मीठा गीत गाने के लिए नहीं है।

The poet tells the cuckoo what a terrible place he is locked in, high black walls all around, darkness, harsh life and humiliation. In jail he is treated like a thief and made to do brutal labour. This is no place for a sweet song.

कवि कोयल और अपनी हालत की तुलना करता है, कोयल हरी-भरी डाल पर बैठी आज़ाद है, जबकि वह काली कोठरी में बंद है। कोयल मीठी कूक लगाती है, पर कैदी की आवाज़ दबा दी जाती है। फिर भी दोनों के अंदर एक जैसी बेचैनी है।

The poet contrasts the cuckoo with himself, she is free on a green branch while he is shut in a dark cell. She sings sweetly while the prisoner's voice is crushed. Yet the same restlessness burns in both.

कवि कहता है, हे कोयल, यह मीठा गीत गाने का समय नहीं है। तेरी यह कूक तो अंग्रेज़ी ज़ुल्म के खिलाफ़ बगावत की गरज, आज़ादी की लड़ाई का बिगुल है। तू अपनी आवाज़ से देश के लोगों को जगा, बदलाव की लड़ाई का संदेश फैला।

The poet says, O cuckoo, this is no time for sweet songs. Your call is a roar of revolt against British tyranny, a war-trumpet of freedom. Awaken the people with your voice and spread the message of revolution.
