प्रेमचंद के फटे जूते Premchand's Torn Shoes

लेखक प्रेमचंद की एक पुरानी फ़ोटो देखते हैं जिसमें वे पत्नी के साथ बैठे हैं। उन्होंने टोपी, कुरता और धोती पहनी है और उनका शरीर पतला है। लेखक की नज़र उनके बाएँ जूते पर पड़ती है जो फटा हुआ है और उसमें से उँगली बाहर झाँक रही है। यह देखकर लेखक चौंक जाते हैं और सोच में पड़ जाते हैं।

The author looks at an old photograph of Premchand seated with his wife. He wears a cap, kurta and dhoti, and his frame is thin. The author's eye falls on his left shoe, which is torn, with the toe peeping out. Startled, the author sinks into thought.

लेखक हैरान होते हैं कि फ़ोटो खिंचवाते समय भी प्रेमचंद ने अपना फटा जूता क्यों नहीं छिपाया? आज तो लोग फ़ोटो के लिए माँगकर भी अच्छे कपड़े-जूते पहन लेते हैं। लेखक सोचते हैं कि शायद पत्नी के कहने पर वे इसी हाल में फ़ोटो खिंचवाने बैठ गए, उन्हें दिखावे की परवाह ही नहीं थी।

The author wonders why Premchand did not even hide his torn shoe while being photographed. Today people borrow good clothes and shoes just for a photo. The author guesses that perhaps at his wife's insistence he sat for the photo just as he was, he simply did not care about appearances.

लेखक सोचते हैं कि प्रेमचंद का जूता किसी हल्की रगड़ से नहीं, बल्कि बार-बार किसी सख्त चीज़ पर ठोकर मारने से फटा है। यह 'सख्त चीज़' समाज की बुरी रीतें, अन्याय और ढोंग हैं। प्रेमचंद इन बुराइयों से बचकर निकलने के बजाय उन्हें सीधे ठोकर मारते रहे, चाहे इसमें उनका जूता ही क्यों न फट जाए। यही उनके न झुकने और साफ़ बोलने की निशानी है।

The author reflects that Premchand's shoe was not torn by some ordinary rub, but by repeatedly kicking against something hard. That 'hard thing' is society's evils, injustice and hypocrisy. Instead of side-stepping these evils, Premchand kept kicking straight at them, even if his shoe tore in the process. This symbolises his firmness and forthrightness.

फ़ोटो में फटे जूते के बावजूद प्रेमचंद के चेहरे पर एक गंभीर, पर संतोष-भरी मुस्कान है। लेखक को यह मुस्कान बेचैन कर देती है, मानो प्रेमचंद उनकी दिखावटी दुनिया का मज़ाक उड़ा रहे हों। यह मुस्कान बताती है कि प्रेमचंद को अपने फटे जूते पर कोई शर्म या दुख नहीं, बल्कि अपने सिद्धांतों पर गर्व और संतोष है।

Despite the torn shoe, Premchand wears a grave yet contented smile in the photo. This smile unsettles the author, as if Premchand were mocking his world of pretence. The smile shows that Premchand felt no shame or sorrow over his torn shoe, but rather pride and satisfaction in his principles.

आख़िर में लेखक आज के समाज पर चोट करते हैं जहाँ लोग अंदर से खाली होकर भी बाहर से दिखावा करते हैं, सिद्धांत छोड़कर सुलह कर लेते हैं और अपनी उँगली (कमज़ोरी) छिपाते हैं। प्रेमचंद इसके उलट, सच्चे, सादे और न झुकने वाले थे। सीख यह है कि असली बड़प्पन दिखावे में नहीं, बल्कि सिद्धांतों पर डटे रहने और मेहनत-संघर्ष में है।

Finally the author satirises today's society, where people are hollow within yet show off outside, make compromises and hide their 'toe' (weakness). Premchand was the opposite, truthful, simple and unyielding. The message is that real greatness lies not in show but in standing firm on principles and in struggle.
