लेखिका बताती हैं कि उनके परिवार में करीब 200 साल से कोई लड़की पैदा नहीं हुई थी। उस ज़माने में लड़कियों को पैदा होते ही मार देने की बुरी रीत थी, पर महादेवी के जन्म पर उनके बाबा बहुत खुश हुए और दुर्गा-पूजा करवाई। उन्होंने बेटी को देवी 'दुर्गा' का रूप मानकर नाम 'महादेवी' रखा। उस समय के लिए यह बहुत बड़ी और अनोखी बात थी।

The author says that no girl had been born in her family for nearly 200 years. In those days there was the evil custom of killing girls at birth, but at Mahadevi's birth her grandfather rejoiced and held a Durga-puja. Regarding his daughter as a form of goddess Durga, he named her 'Mahadevi'. This was extraordinary for that time.

महादेवी का परिवार पढ़ा-लिखा था। उनके बाबा को उर्दू-फारसी अच्छी आती थी और पिता ने अंग्रेज़ी में पढ़ाई की थी। उनकी माँ जबलपुर से अपने साथ हिंदी भाषा लाई थीं। माँ ने ही महादेवी को हिंदी सिखाई, 'पंचतंत्र' पढ़ना सिखाया, मीरा के पद और भगवान के भजन सिखाए। इस माहौल ने महादेवी के मन में साहित्य और भक्ति की अच्छी आदतें भर दीं।

Mahadevi's family was well-educated. Her grandfather knew Urdu and Persian, and her father had studied in English. Her mother brought the Hindi language with her from Jabalpur. It was her mother who taught Mahadevi Hindi, taught her to read the 'Panchatantra', and taught her Meera's verses and devotional songs. This atmosphere instilled in Mahadevi the values of literature and devotion.

महादेवी क्रॉस्थवेट गर्ल्स कॉलेज, इलाहाबाद के होस्टल में रहीं। वहाँ का जीवन परिवार जैसा प्यार-भरा था, जहाँ जात-पात का कोई भेदभाव नहीं था। वहीं उनकी पक्की दोस्ती बड़ी कक्षा की छात्रा सुभद्रा कुमारी चौहान से हुई, जो छिपकर कविता लिखती थीं। सुभद्रा ने महादेवी को भी कविता लिखने के लिए उकसाया और दोनों मिलकर कवियों के काव्य-पाठ के आयोजनों में हिस्सा लेने लगीं।

Mahadevi lived in the hostel of Crosthwaite Girls' College, Allahabad. Life there was loving like a family, with no caste discrimination. There she formed a close friendship with the senior student Subhadra Kumari Chauhan, who wrote poems secretly. Subhadra inspired Mahadevi too to write poetry, and the two began taking part in poets' gatherings together.

होस्टल में जात और धर्म का कोई भेदभाव नहीं था। महादेवी और उनकी मुसलमान सहेली ज़ेबुन्निसा में गहरा प्यार था; ज़ेबुन्निसा अक्सर लेखिका के काम कर देती थी। दोनों एक-दूसरे के त्योहार मिलकर मनाती थीं। यह बात उस ज़माने की सच्ची हिंदू-मुसलमान एकता और आपसी प्रेम को दिखाती है, जो आज भी मन में जोश भर देती है।

In the hostel there was no discrimination of caste or religion. Mahadevi and her Muslim friend Zebunnisa shared deep affection; Zebunnisa often did the author's chores. They celebrated each other's festivals together. This episode reflects the genuine Hindu-Muslim unity and communal harmony of that era, which is inspiring even today.

उन्हीं दिनों गांधी जी इलाहाबाद के आनंद भवन आए। महादेवी दूसरी छात्राओं के साथ अपने रोज़ के खर्च से बचाकर कुछ रुपये देने उनके पास गईं। उन्होंने कवियों के आयोजन में इनाम के रूप में मिला चाँदी का कटोरा गांधी जी को दिखाया। गांधी जी के माँगने पर लेखिका ने वह कटोरा देश की भलाई के लिए फ़ौरन दान कर दिया। यह घटना उनके देश-प्रेम और त्याग को दिखाती है।

In those very days Gandhiji came to Anand Bhavan, Allahabad. Mahadevi, with other students, went to give him some money saved from her pocket-allowance. She showed him a silver bowl she had won as a prize at a poets' gathering. When Gandhiji asked for it, the author at once donated the bowl for the nation's cause. This event reflects her patriotism and spirit of sacrifice.
