इस जल प्रलय में In This Deluge of Water

लेखक बचपन से बाढ़-पीड़ितों के बीच रहे हैं, इसलिए बाढ़ उनके लिए नई बात नहीं। इस बार पटना में पानी चढ़ने की खबर सुनकर वे घर में ईंधन, आलू, मोमबत्ती, माचिस, पीने का पानी और दवा की गोलियाँ इकट्ठा कर लेते हैं और बाढ़ के आने का इंतज़ार करते हैं। पूरे शहर में एक अजीब-सी बेचैनी और देखने की उत्सुकता फैल जाती है।

The writer has lived among flood victims since childhood, so floods are nothing new to him. Hearing that the water is rising in Patna, he stocks his home with fuel, potatoes, candles, matches, drinking water and medicine tablets, then waits for the flood to arrive. A strange restlessness and curiosity spreads through the whole city.

पानी धीरे-धीरे शहर के बड़े-बड़े हिस्सों को घेरने लगता है। राजभवन, मुख्यमंत्री-निवास और गोलघर तक पानी पहुँच जाता है; शाम तक कॉफ़ी हाउस डूब जाता है। शाम साढ़े सात बजे आकाशवाणी बताता है कि पानी अब आकाशवाणी केंद्र की सीढ़ियों तक आ गया है। शहर का रोज़ का जीवन रुक जाता है।

Slowly the water begins to surround large parts of the city. It reaches Raj Bhavan, the Chief Minister's residence and the Golghar; by evening the Coffee House is submerged. At half past seven, All India Radio announces that the water has now reached the steps of the radio station itself. Normal life in the city comes to a standstill.

अजीब बात यह है कि लोग बाढ़ से डरने के साथ-साथ उसे देखने भी टूट पड़ते हैं। रिक्शे, ताँगे और स्कूटरों पर सवार लोग पानी देखने निकल पड़ते हैं; गांधी मैदान के पास भीड़ दशहरे जैसी जुट जाती है। आपदा के बीच भी लोगों में उत्सुकता, बातचीत और हँसी-मज़ाक बना रहता है।

Strangely, even as people fear the flood, they also pour out to watch it. On rickshaws, tongas and scooters they set off to see the water; near the Gandhi Maidan a crowd gathers as large as on Dussehra. Even amid disaster, the people keep their curiosity, their chatter and their light-hearted humour.

बाढ़ देखते-देखते लेखक को अपने पुराने समय की बाढ़ें याद आती हैं, गुरु के साथ नाव पर दवा, तेल और माचिस लेकर पीड़ितों के पास जाना, और एक टीले पर लोगों का लोकनृत्य करते और मछली पकाकर खाते हुए दिखना। यह दृश्य दिखाता है कि सबसे बुरे समय में भी जीवन अपना रास्ता और अपनी खुशी ढूँढ़ ही लेता है।

As he watches, the writer recalls floods from his past, going out by boat with his teacher to reach victims with medicine, oil and matches, and seeing people on a mound performing folk dances and cooking and eating fish. This scene shows that even in the worst of times, life finds its own way and its own joy.

रातभर लेखक को नींद नहीं आती। सुबह साढ़े पाँच बजे जागने पर वे देखते हैं कि पूरा मोहल्ला पानी में डूब चुका है, चारों ओर शोर है। लेखक मन-ही-मन यह सब लिखना और कैद करना चाहते हैं, पर उनके पास न मूवी कैमरा है, न टेप रिकॉर्डर। फिर भी वे कहते हैं, 'अच्छा है, मेरे पास कुछ नहीं है', क्योंकि असली दर्द मशीनों से नहीं, मन और कलम से ही महसूस किया जा सकता है।

The writer cannot sleep all night. Waking at half past five, he finds the entire locality submerged, noise everywhere. In his heart he wants to write down and capture it all, but he has neither a movie camera nor a tape recorder. Yet he says, 'It is good that I have nothing,' for real suffering can be felt not through machines but through the heart and the pen.
