मेरे संग की औरतें The Women Who Walked With Me

लेखिका कहती हैं कि उनके जीवन को बनाने में उनके परिवार की औरतों का बड़ा हाथ रहा। ये औरतें पुराने रीति-रिवाज वाले समाज में रहती थीं, फिर भी हर एक की अपनी अलग पहचान, अपनी सोच और अपना स्वाभिमान था। इन्हीं औरतों की यादें वे एक-एक करके सामने रखती हैं।

The writer says that the women of her family played a great part in shaping her life. These women lived in a traditional society, yet each had her own identity, her own thinking and her own self-respect. She brings forward the memories of these women one by one.

लेखिका की परनानी ज़रूरत से ज़्यादा चीज़ें जमा करने में यकीन नहीं रखती थीं, उन्होंने व्रत लिया था कि दो से ज़्यादा धोतियाँ नहीं रखेंगी। सबसे हिम्मत वाली बात यह थी कि उन्होंने मंदिर में मन्नत माँगी कि उनके घर पहली संतान लड़की हो, जबकि उस समय हर कोई बेटा चाहता था। यह उनकी आगे की सोच और हिम्मत को दिखाता है।

The writer's great-grandmother believed in non-possession (aparigrah), vowing never to keep more than two dhotis. Her most daring act was to pray in the temple that her first child be a girl, at a time when everyone wished only for a son. This shows her forward thinking and courage.

नानी ऊपर से अनपढ़ और परदे में रहने वाली थीं और जीवनभर पति से अपनी इच्छा खुलकर नहीं कह पाईं। पर भीतर से वे हिम्मती और देश से प्यार करने वाली थीं। जीवन के आखिरी दिनों में उन्होंने मशहूर क्रांतिकारी प्यारेलाल शर्मा से मुलाकात की और कहा कि वे अपनी बेटी का विवाह किसी क्रांतिकारी से करना चाहती हैं, अंग्रेज़ों के किसी भक्त से नहीं।

Outwardly the grandmother was illiterate and observed purdah, and all her life she could never openly voice her wishes to her husband. Yet inwardly she was brave and patriotic. In her last days she met the famous revolutionary Pyarelal Sharma and told him she wished to marry her daughter to a revolutionary, not to any loyalist of the British.

लेखिका की माँ आम भारतीय माँओं जैसी नहीं थीं। उन्हें घर-गृहस्थी के काम से ज़्यादा किताबें पढ़ने और संगीत सुनने में रुचि थी। उनकी सबसे बड़ी खासियत थी, पूरी ईमानदारी और बिना पक्षपात का व्यवहार: वे कभी झूठ नहीं बोलती थीं और एक की छिपी बात दूसरे को नहीं बताती थीं। उन्होंने बच्चों पर रोक-टोक लादने के बजाय उन्हें आज़ादी से सोचने और बढ़ने की छूट दी।

The writer's mother was not like ordinary Indian mothers. She was more interested in reading books and listening to music than in housework. Her greatest quality was complete honesty and fairness: she never told a lie and never revealed one person's secret to another. Instead of imposing restrictions on her children, she gave them the freedom to think and grow independently.

पाँचों बहनें अलग-अलग स्वभाव की थीं पर हर एक अपनी धुन की पक्की और स्वाभिमानी थी। बड़ी बहन मंजुल भगत आगे चलकर लेखिका बनीं। चित्रा को दूसरों को पढ़ाने में मज़ा आता था। रेणु इतनी अपने बल पर जीने वाली और पक्के इरादे की थी कि बारिश में भी अकेली दो मील पैदल स्कूल जाती और सच और तर्क पर अड़ी रहती। अचला बड़ी होकर लिखने की ओर मुड़ीं। किसी भी बहन के मन में यह छोटा होने का भाव नहीं था कि वह 'सिर्फ़ एक लड़की' है। खुद लेखिका ने बागलकोट में अपने बल पर एक प्राइमरी स्कूल खोला। इस तरह यह संस्मरण औरत के आत्म-सम्मान और आज़ाद सोच का सुंदर चित्र बन जाता है।

The five sisters had different temperaments, yet each was firm in her own way and full of self-respect. The eldest, Manjul Bhagat, became a writer. Chitra enjoyed teaching others. Renu was so self-reliant and resolute that she walked two miles to school alone even in the rain and stood firm by truth and reason. Achala turned to writing when she grew up. Not one of the sisters carried the feeling that she was 'only a girl'. The writer herself opened a primary school in Bagalkot on her own strength. In this way the memoir becomes a beautiful portrait of a woman's self-respect and independent thinking.
