شبنم Shabnam (Dew)

भावार्थ: क्या ये (शबनम की बूँदें) वे तारे हैं जो ज़मीन पर उतर आए हैं? या वे मोती हैं जो चाँद ने बरसाए हैं? या फिर वे हीरे हैं जो जंगल में यूँ ही पड़े मिल गए? कहीं मेरी यह बात बहुत दूर की कल्पना तो नहीं हो गई - कहीं ऐसा तो नहीं कि रात अपने आँसू भूलकर यहीं छोड़ गई?

Meaning: are these drops of dew the stars that have descended onto the earth? Or are they pearls showered down by the moon? Or are they diamonds simply found lying in the forest? Perhaps this thought of mine goes too far - could it be that the night forgot its own tears here?

भावार्थ: ज़मीन ने अकसर यह कहानी भी सुनाई है - जब कहकशाँ (आकाशगंगा) रात के पिछले पहर अपने घर लौटती है, तो छींकती हुई लाखों मोती (गोहर) बुन जाती है। और हर सुबह यही खेल फिर रचा जाता है - इन (बूँदों) को सूरज (ख़ुर्शीद) की किरणों रूपी पलकों से चुन लिया जाता है।

Meaning: the earth has often told this story too - when the galaxy (kahkashaan) heads home in the last watch of the night, it sneezes and weaves millions of pearls in the process. And every morning this same game is played out again - these drops are gathered up by the sun's eyelash-like rays.

भावार्थ: जिस तरह बाग़ के फूलों को अपना चमन (बाग़) पिआरा है, और जंगल में खिलने वाली कलियों को अपना बन (जंगल) पिआरा है, उसी तरह शबनम को भी अपना वतन (ज़मीन) पिआरा है। कहकशाँ (आकाशगंगा) रोज़ उसे बुलाकर बहकाने की कोशिश करती है, मगर उसे सुकून तो ज़मीन की गोद (दामन) में ही मिलता है।

Meaning: just as a garden's flowers hold their garden dear, and the buds blooming in a forest hold that forest dear, so too dew holds its own homeland, the earth, dear. The galaxy calls out to it every day trying to tempt it away, but dew finds peace only in the lap of the earth.
