About the author
This nazm is by Hafeez Jalandhari (1900-1982, of Jalandhar), a celebrated Urdu poet - he wrote Pakistan's national anthem and the long poem 'Shahnama-e-Islam'. He is known for his sweet, song-like nature poetry. 'Lo Phir Basant Aai' is a lyrical, song-like nazm celebrating the arrival of spring.
Summary
भावार्थ: लो, फिर बसंत ऋतु आ गई। चलो बिना देर किए, गंगा के पानी (आब गंग) की ओर चलें, जहाँ जल-तरंग (पानी की लहरें) बज रही हैं। मन उमंग से छा गया है, और बसंत ने फूलों पर रंग बिखेर दिया है।
Meaning: Behold, spring has come again. Let us go without delay, to the waters of the Ganga, where the waves ripple like music. The heart is filled with joy, and spring has painted colour onto the flowers.
भावार्थ: लो, फिर बसंत आ गई। खेतों में चलने वाला हर जानवर (चरिंदा) और बाग़ों का हर परिंदा - कोई जोश से भरा है, कोई गीत गा रहा है, हल्के और तेज़ अंदाज़ में सब फिर से ज़िंदा हो उठे हैं। सरसों के पीले फूल खिल उठे हैं।
Meaning: Behold, spring has come again. Every creature that roams the fields, every bird of the orchards - some full of vigour, some pouring out song, light and swift, everything has come alive once more. The mustard fields have burst into yellow bloom.
भावार्थ: कुछ भी याद नहीं रहता (सारी फ़िक्रें भूल जाती हैं), बस यूँही मुराद पूरी होने की ख़ुशी है, यूँही सब ख़ुश-ख़ुश हैं - मानो बरसों से यूँही ख़ुश रह रहे हों। सरसों फूली हुई है, और लो, बसंत फिर आ गई, फूलों पर रंग बिखेर गई।
Meaning: Nothing else is remembered - there is only this simple joy of a wish fulfilled, everyone is happy, happy, as if they had been living in this happiness for years. The mustard is in full bloom, and behold, spring has come again, bringing colour to the flowers.
